Anyone who has ever had to deal with an insurance company knows the struggle you can encounter. It seems that insurance companies are always raising their rates but lowering their amount of coverage. For instance, last summer, we had lots of rain. We have a rock wall in front of our home. The wall just feel down. It was a major structure and we were going to have to hire someone to reinstall it. We filed a claim on the homeowners insurance. They sent an inspector out. They then denied it. They said it was caused by all the rain we had and since we did not have flood insurance, it was not covered. Many people do not have an inventory list because they do not know how to make one. There is this really cool software that is FREE to download. This software will help you to create an inventory. It allows you to organize your possessions room by room. It provides lists of possessions that are typically found in certain rooms as a prompt. It has the capacity to store digital photographs so you can document all your possessions visually. You can burn your inventory list complete with photos to a CD. There is also many other ways to store you list. This free download is available for both windows and Mac OS. http://www.knowyourstuff.org/ You should try to make multiple copies and be sure to keep one copy of your inventory outside your home. Many insurance companies will keep a copy in your file at their office. Remember: When Tragedy Hits- The Time To Prepare Is Over

Thanks for the free download, I needed to get a list together of our personal belongings and this program is going to help. We rent an apartment but I have been talking to my hubby about getting insurance on our personal belongings but he thinks we don't need it but I think otherwise.

Thanks for the link, I saved it to my favorites for checking into later. Thats something we all need to think about doing and then doing it. Insurance companies are so quick to get our money, but then they like to balk at paying a claim.

I feel your pain on the denied insurance claim, village! Always know what you are paying for. I got so mad at the home warranty company last year. Our air conditioner located in our attic leaked last year and caused damage to the ceiling in the room beneath it. The warranty company didn't cover the damage to the ceiling, as it was secondary damage from the air conditioner. They suggested calling the home owners insurance to cover the damaged ceiling. What they were willing to give us was a joke! We never did get the ceiling repaired. After the $1000 deductible was taken out of the check we could only get the spot painted over, not actually repaired. It seems to me insurance is getting to be such a waste of money, yet you don't dare to go without it!
