China's One Child Policy - is it still in effect?

Recently I met a very nice young Chinese woman who had emigrated to my country. In conversation she mentioned her sister. I was really surprised since I thought China had a one child policy. She told me that under certain conditions you can have more than one child. Can anyone shed light on this?

from what I understand yes you can have more than one child, especially if your first child is a girl, you can try for a boy I have been told by one chinese person, and another told me that if you have more than one child, they make you pay hirer taxes but that is it.

Yes, it seems higher taxes is one method thatis used to penalize people who do not follow the rules of that particula area.

I thought the same thing so I decided to look the issue up. Apparently, it varies from region to region. The rule is more enforced in urban areas, but not enforced at all in others. Some places have a birth spacing plan in place (a child can only be born every 3 or 4 years). The parents that do not follow the regulation get fined. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-child_policy

Why thank you. I followed the link and found the information very interesting. I wonder if people are still encouraged to have abortions if the spacing plan is not followed.

I don't think the one child policy really effected very much in China nowadays. There are many a rich ones who could afford a stable of children. The one child policy seem more practical for the poor who cannot afford to raise more that one child. Maybe this is more the reason.
