I really don't know what "sick as a dog" means but I'm pretty darn sick. Day four in bed and now my insides are aching too. I was wondering, besides chicken noodle soup, are there any other home made remedies that would get me through the flu? I've also been drinking hot chicken broth with garlic powder. Mm, yumm. Anyhow, any advice would be appreciated. Life seems to be drifting by outside my bedroom window.

Here is one that may sound gross to those who don't like grapefruit, but it helped me get over the flu quick one year. Take a white grapefruit and slice it into 8 sections. Place in a pan of water and boil for a couple of minutes. Take the water and pour into a cup with honey and sip it. Since I love grapefruit, I also eat the boiled fruit itself..

Interesting, I've actually been eating grapefruit these past few days for breakfast. I peeled it and poured sugar on top. I don't know if I should have added sugar but it made me feel better. Never thought of boiling it. There's one more left so I think I might try it. The honey should make the broth taste a little better. I'll try the boiled grapefruit too. Thanks C.

That's so true, you ever had a doctor prescribe the rondac or cardac cough medicine? We usually turn it down because you have to be dying to take that stuff...lol

OK, if your stomach is in that bad of shape go back to your infanthood. Obviously keep the fluids coming, but here is a little secret that almost always works. It works great with babies who get a belly ache too. You will be amazed at how well this works....And for $19.99 I will tell you the secret. lol Just kidding. I just thought I was starting to sound like a commercial. :) Peppermint stick. As crazy as that sounds EVERYONE of my 4 children, myself and my wife, swear that peppermint really calms the stomach down. Not gum and not the soft peppermint. The gum Usually causes a gag reflex so don't try that. The soft peppermints just don't stay long enough so then you have to eat more of them and that much sweets will make you sick. So get a candy cane or one of the round peppermint hard candies. It will calm things down some. Don't chew it up just suck on it for a while. This also works if your sick from being dizzy like after getting off a fair ride. Try it them tell me what you think.

Hehehee, that was worth $19.99. Okay, I'll look for some candy canes left over from Christmas and let you know how it went. Thanks, my friend.

Have you tried jello? Make sure it's not sugar free if you have the flu. Need that sugar. Drink as much water as you can handle. If you can get someone to boil a chicken for you and drink that broth and munch on the chicken, that might be a big help. Might throw some rice in the pot too since rice is binding, if that's part of your sickness. Take care of yourself and get better, carolbee

Hi Carolbee, I haven't tried the jello yet but I did have yogurt with Omega 3. It was smooth and made me feel better on the spot, though I could hardly taste the cherry flavor. Can't wait to taste again. Thanks again for the tlc.

I don't know about a home remedy but when I am sick my husband makes me a chicken noodle dish that helps settle my tummy. He boils chicken down until it is cooked. Then he adds two bags of eggnoodles to the stock. He lets it cook all day. This is almost like a soup. He then make mashed potatoes. You put a spoonfull or two of mashpotates in the bottom of the bowl and add the noodles and chicken on top. It is a mild flavor. This chicken noodles will help settle your tummy and get something of substance on your stomack without making you sicker. I love this stuff. I am also a found believer in Vick rapor rub. I put some under my nose to help keep it open when I get sinus problems. I have also put it on my check to open it up as well. Vicks has been around for years. I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, Sizzle. This sounds like a dish we should enter in a recipe contest or something. Very cool. I will write it down and try it. And you're right the Vick's vapor rub is a life safer. I've been using it and actually put some in my nose. Might not have been something to do but I was desperate. Never rubbed it on my cheek before. Sounds gross, but it's been that kind of week anyhow. Thanks, my friend.

Taking small chunkc of fresh garlic cloves would be a lot better than the garlic powder in the broth, but if you can't get any, stick with the powder. If you happen to have any honey at home, stir in a spoonful in a cup of tea, or take a spoonful straight. Honey is a good anti-bacterial and anti-septic and many people take it when they feel a cold coming on, or when they are sick to help them get over it. Another good thing about the honey is it will help you sleep too, so you'll get a more restful sleep. Taking a warm bath is a good idea because it raises your body temperature which helps your body fight off bacteria.

We actually have garlic growing in our back yard. I'll have to snag some and put them in my broth. I just hope I won't start getting stinky. lol. I didn't know that about the honey either. I'll definitely take a spoonful right now. Thanks a lot, my friend. That is some pretty awesome advice.

The funny thing about honey is it's coming back as a good home remedy. Doctors never believed honey helped coughs and a very recent study proved honey was great for reducing coughing in kids over the cough syrup that is on the market today. And some hospitals are starting to use honey bandages. They've found honey is a lot better healer than regular bandages and other products on the market. People that have had wounds for years that just would not heal, used honey bandages and healed about 90% in a few weeks! And I read a home remedy somewhere where a family would chunk up the garlic cloves and take a teaspoon full of honey with the garlic clove at least once to help get rid of a cold, or flu so you could always try taking them both at the same time and see what happens.

Hello dear gtargirl. I am so sorry to hear that you are sick. I hope that you will get better soon. When I get sick, I do not want to eat much, but have some plain soup as well. I like to have some porridge instead of other solid food and I also like to sleep in bed. Have a good rest and take care, my dear friend.

Aw, dear William, thanks for caring. It feels really good having friends who care. Actually this is day 5 and I'm at least out of bed. I tried raking leaves today. After 10 minutes I thought I was going to pass out so I retreated to the living room couch. I'm taking everyone's advice and resting some more. Thanks, my friend, for caring.

Well, I don't know what kind of flu you have, but I just spend a miserable few days in bed with a respiratory flu that actually was more in my chest. I dosed on Vitamin C, a multi-vitamin, B complex, lots of sips of water and gaterade, green tea, - anything to replenish electrolytes and liquid. I made myself get out of bed a few minutes here and there until I could tolerate it longer. Rest is what gets you better, but there comes a point when you have to start up moving again little by little. wishing you well.

I didn't try the vitamin C thing but I did eat a lot of oranges and grape fruit. That made me feel pretty good. I'll have to stock up on some of that green tea. Kind of forgot how good that can be for our health. And it seems that rest is still the best thing to get rid of this bug. Thanks, Whittby.

Any soda that is left out for the fizz to play out and served at room temp is supposed to help. Just a word of advice....my granddaughter had the flu for several day..and ended up in the emergency room...seems when you get the flu you also get lactose intolerant....so for a week after you feel good you should stay away from dairy! Or you could end up just as sick again!

Thanks jillhill, I will try the fizzless soda. Sounds kind of gross though. I'll stay away from the dairy too. Never heard of that. Good to know since I've been eyeing the chocolate milk in the fridge for a while now. Hope your granddaughter is doing well now. Thanks again.

First of all, I think your sickness should be ceased with all these advices, and plus you should have earned some supernatural power (aren't you flying yet?). Anyway, once I had chickenpox (varicella) and I was 13...Oh, it was 'till the end of june...well, the illness lasted for three months, just in time to get back to school full healthy, after I spent my whole summer in bed (my doctor said it was the worst varicella he'd ever seen): this won't probably help your body to restore its strenght (even if - as already said - by now you should be flying somewhere...) but will certainly improve your psichological status....There's always something worse!
