I have tried to understand that but is it a bit of masoquism? I played the game Silent Hill 4: The Room and as soon as I saw some of the "monsters" (they are too horrible to be monsters) of the introduction I just thought "this game was made by someone whose mind is not very well". What do you think about it?

It's like asking "Why do people like to watch horror movies?"... we like a good scare, and I think, at the same time, by playing the horror game, we're kind of fighting back against our own fears. If you think about it, the object is to win, right? So you have to beat the monsters, right? So, it's like revenge for all those nightmares you had as a child. It's looking fear in the face and coming out on top. And at the same time.. it's safe, because you know, it's just a game. You don't really have to turn the corner on the way to the bathroom and come face to face with one of those creepy things. But, you still get to kick the crud out of one and feel good about it.
My take on it anyways.
