I had eclampsia when I gave birth last Aug 2008. I was not even aware that my high blood pressure was an indicator of pre-eclampsia. My BP shoot up to 220/180 and they gave me about 3 shoots of magnesium sulfate while on labor aside from the injections that would lower my blood pressure. Luckily, me and my child came out of it alive. Could you share your experience on eclampsia? Is there a way to prevent it?

i was never "diagnosed" with it but they called me borderline. i had swelling high blood pressure, but no protein, and my liver was working right. i had my blood drawn like 3409583 times LOL i was induced the day she was due. it wasn't a very good experience within the last month of my pregnancy. i did a lot of research about it and there is NO way to stop from having it. people who are more likely of getting it is younger women, first time mothers, and women who's family has a history of hypertension. its not very likely to get it in any other pregnancy, but you can. oh and it doesn't usually effect the child in any way, just the mother.. well other then the fact that if a child is born way early.. obviously that can effect the child's out come

My youngest kid was only 35 to 36 weeks when she was delivered. The Doctor said that my BP could have caused my early labor. I was lucky because she has a good lungs and need not be put in an incubator. Thanks for replying. I hope my succeeding pregnancies (If I could get pregnant again, that is)won't be with eclampsia because the experience is really traumatic.

With my first daughter, I felt wonderful. Never a moment of morning sickness or any other complaint. Then about my my 7th month, my blood pressure shot up. And up! At that time, 1972, the doctor didn't give anything for blood pressure if you were pregnant. My feet were swelling, in fact my whole body was swelling. My daughter was due on January 26th, and at my regular appointment, the doctor told me he was putting me in the hospital. My blood pressure was 240/200. While in the hospital, they gave me tons of diuretics. One night, they gave me phenobarbital to keep me from having seizures or a stroke (they said). I was allergic to it. I had huge hives and almost stopped breathing in my sleep. Well, they fixed that. They decided to break my water to start labor on the 26th. My daughter was born at 1:19 on the 27th. She was fine, except that she only weighed 5 pounds and 6 ounces. I lost almost 40 pounds that night! The old nurse that was with me kept saying how she had never seen so much water! lol With my second daughter, I had no problems at all. My high blood pressure never returned and I'm 53 now. I don't really think there is a way to prevent it.

I guess I'll just have to make sure that I am well throughout my next pregnancy. Right now, I was advised not to get pregnant as much as possible because I might suffer heart failure. Thanks for your response.
