Tonsil Removal

How many myLotters have had their tonsils removed? I was about 4 years old and had nothing but trouble with my throat and tonsils. I vaguely remember being in the hospital but remember eating popsickles after the surgery. As a result, I never have sore throats and rarely catch a cold. Might get a little scratchy feeling in the throat but not for long.

I had my tonsils and adenoids removed at the same time when I was a teenager. I don't remember it well, to be honest. I do remember using the excuse not to talk for quite a while after I was technically healed, just for my own amusement. I do still get colds and sore throats just as badly as I did before. Then again, my immune system is a piece of crap to start with. *shrugs*

Oh yeah, I forgot my adenoids went along with the package. Duh! I am sorry your immune system is not good. Am surprised you still get sore throats. Mine are history. Thanks for responding.

It's great that you no longer get sore throats! :) I think a lot of mine are actually more a side effect of my breathing problems than a problem with my throat itself. I cough a lot, and cough stuff up, so that can cause a sore throat.

Ouch having the tonsils removed at 52 has to be uncomfortable. One of our daughter's had hers removed at 22 and she was so miserable. No sore throats for her either. Thanks for responding.

I've never had the removed to be truthful. I used to get sick a lot when I was younger and I thought I would have to get them out. The doctors kept telling us no so it's never been done. I'm thankful for it now though. I've not gotten sick like I used to and I think they've helped me not get as sick.

For many years the doctor's advised getting tonsils out. I was in that generation. Glad you are doing ok. Thanks for responding.

I never had my tonsils out and I have a lot of problems with sore throats - I've had one since Christmas and nothing at all seems to be helping.

Sometimes sinus drainage will cause a sore throat. Have you checked with your doctor? Thanks for responding.

Not having insurance makes things really hard. I've been there before. :( Have you tried any special sore throat teas? I drink one with slippery elm in it, and it's really helpful.

Hate to admit it but haven't been to the doctor - no insurance and no money I've just been suffering and treating myself with what I have on hand.

I know that I had mine removed when I was a little girl because I could not keep nothing down and now like you I barely keep a cold or have sore throats my daughter had them removed a few years ago. But the best thing that I remember about them was all the icecream

At the same time! - operations
My sister and I had our tonsils removed together when I was 7 and she was 6. I guess back then they did things like that...lol! I still remember being able to have all the ice cream we could eat and being treated like queens when we got home!

Thanks for the reminder. Ice cream was a treat along with the popsickles. Cheaper by the dozen theory, maybe by keeping it "All in the Family." Thanks for responding.

I and my brother had our tonsils removed at the same time. He was about 4 and I was8. I hated him at that time. My throat was sore sore and he was sitting the bed next to mine and eating ice cream and popsickles. It was about a week before I could eat ice cream comfortably. Every one back then had them removed. They don't do it as much any more. A School nurse kept insisting that my son had his removed. She just couldn't see them or didn't know what she was looking for. I really feel for any adult that has to have them removed.

It's a real tough surgery for adults. Our 22 yr. old daughter had them out and it was awful. She was so sick. She's now 31 and doesn't get sore throats any longer. Thanks for responding.

My tonsils were removed when I was a child. The procedure was performed at home on the kitchen table by our family doctor. It was during WWII an as the hospital were filled with injured military personnel so you could not get it done there. I suffered no consequences but my mother had hers removed when she was an adult and was very ill. Seemingly it is quite a nasty procedure for adults.

I had mine removed when I was 12 after having one throat infection after another for years. My doctor was one who didn't like to do that unless it was absolutely necessary but he finally sent me to a specialist who said they should come out. I rarely got sick after that and I still hardly ever get colds or sore throats. But I was so mad because everyone told me I'd get ice cream and I didn't! Annie

I still have my tonsils. I do get sore throats, but only when I catch a cold which isn't that often. I never really had any trouble with my throat.:)

Am glad to hear you don't have any problems with your throat. I really don't know what it's like to get a sore throat since the tonsils were removed. Thanks for responding.

I'm 22 and still have my tonsils. I'm constantly sick and every year I have strep throat! Ugh it's so horrible. I wish I could have them out and I don't know why my parents never got them taken out. Hopefully my kids won't have bad immunities like I do and they won't get sick all the time. But if they do then I'm so going to push to have them removed. It's less trouble.

One of our daughter's had her tonsils out when she was 22. It was really hard and she was so sick but feels so much better. It's been 9 yrs. since that time and she never gets a sore throat anymore. Most doctor's want to leave them in now versus removal. When I was a kid everyone had their tonsils out. Thanks for responding.

Well, I had my tonsils out last year at age 31 and I must say it was one of the most painful things I have ever been through. The popcicle and ice cream only hurt to eat due to it being too cold. The doctor told me I could eat chicken noodle soup because the noodles are so soft, but the high sodium in the soup itself burned like hell. I was out of work a total of 4 weeks for a crappin tonsil removal. It did hurt very badly and thank god they make liquid pain medicine or I would have been in big trouble...

I never had my tonsills remove. My 3 year old nephew had it done about 4 months ago. It was done outpatient, and he has unfortunately had colds. I guess you are luck for not having any colds.

I still have my tonsils. I did not have serious problems with my tonsils getting infected. I get flu or cold sometimes, that causes my throat to hurt and sore. My tonsils were not a problen and when the flu or cold is over, my throat doesn't hurt any more.

I dose myself up because I have been told if I get Tonsilitis again, I am having them out. The problem is they do a job, they filter germs and stop you getting worse things.

They do have a job, they are basically the last filter vefore your lungs. You can still get a version of tonsilitis, even without tonsils. It does suck, and you just do not seem to be able to get rid of it for good.

I first had my tonsils out when I was 18 years old. I remember the pain and the time spent waiting to recover. 2 months after having them removed they grew back 3 times the size causing me more pain and trouble then getting tonsillitis. 4 weeks ago I had my tonsils removed by a new doctor which so far seems to be going good. I was told and by researching I found out that my tonsils grew back because the first doctor did NOT remove them properly. But so far so good after having a doctor butcher my throat I have faith in the new doctors work.
