On February 7 2008 we will celebrate Chinese New Year. The Year of Rat. I was at theater yesterday for Holiday Wonders and Chinese New Year Spectacular Show. After the show I ate very late dinner at almost 10 PM in Chinatown... I am planning to visit Chinatown on February 07 2008. Do you know about Chinese celebrations in your town or in China?

I was born in the Year of the Rat.... One of the things in Florida is there is not the culture that you have up north. I am from Baltimore and there is Little Italy and Germantown, etc.... No culture down here unfortunately.

Watch out zeloguy. I heard that if it's the year of your animal that you will not have a good year. Don't know how that's true, just what I heard. I'm also from Baltimore.

where I came from there are lots of chinese and chinese food everywhere much like chinatown here I don't celebrate imlek by eating chinese food in china town as some of them I can make myself I prepare myself for the new year. each year is different and I have a few sites that have been providing advices to me for free and yet about 85% accurate so I take note and do what they say. rat year is full of income opportunities for me, easier to get money this year, but business wise a lot of hassles pig year (2007) was draining year in money but business wise it was one of the best years in my life hope the best for you in rat year

We always have a lunar new year celebration in our school. ALl the students from our cantonese class participate in a concert that is presented to the whole school during the day and to the parents after school. It's usually very good :) It's a way to let kids learn about special cultural events that they might not be aware of normally. Before that I knew about lunar new year because one of my uncles used to live in Macau and used to tell us about the celebrations.

Japanese New Year - Kagamimochi, a deco made of rounded rice rolls
In my home city we celebrate more the Japanese New Year which has a much larger population in Brazil. They have parades and typical food plus some religious ceremonies that are very interesting to watch.

Putting this way, it's probably the same thing we're talking about as cultures in East Asia must have a common background. Good point :)

Here in Thailand we celebrate three New Years. The Thai New Year is a three day celebration from April 13 - 16. The year here 2551. As a large majority of Thais are decendents of China, we also celebrate that New Year. And of course we have big celebrations on Dec 31.
