The Neverending Storm of Politics

I'm really not fond of the whole political scene, and I try to stay as neutral as possible on elections, but I am really getting fed up with the negative campaigning that never seems to end. I think all the candidates in this year's elections (I'm speaking of the U.S. Presidential election, for those of you living outside the States) have been running for years, and they haven't even hit all the primaries yet. Why do politicians want to be elected based on the "Vote for me, because my opponent is a mean and nasty person" line of reasoning? Does anybody else feel this way? Quite frankly, as I did in 2004, I'm considering a write-in vote for me.
