How long is too long when it comes to unresolved discussions?

There are always a lot of unresolved discussion posts here, and this is no different. So, what I'm wondering is, how long is too long to keep discussions open before choosing a best response?
I've seen some that go for a few months before the poster chooses a best response, I've seen some that are chosen the same day they are posted. So, what is it? Is right away better or should you at least wait awhile before choosing? And, how long should you wait? Or how long do you wait?

I usually choose a best response when the responses sort of come to an end or if I just get one that is so great that I have to give it right then. I have had a couple of those. It doesn't stop people from responding if it is a good post so I go ahead and award it.
I do not like to let the people wait too long. But I will wait if the Post is going fast and I am geting a lot of responses and we are having a good time!

When I start my own discussion, which is seldom because I prefer to respond more. I am lucky enough to get two or three pages of responses, so I know that most of them will stop after two or three days.
If this happens, I choose to resolve it after a week or two -depending on the amount of responses I receive. I would like to give other potential responders a chance to share their ideas, so I would wait for the right time to resolve it.

I wait two weeks before choosing a best response. I see some people who select the best response on the very first answer they get that day. I think it is only fair to let people have time to find your discussion, and post when they have a chance. Nobody's way is wrong, but I like to encourage people to take their time and write what they really feel, without feeling rushed to respond to all their friend's discussions.
