A Prophet of God for our day. Gordon B. Hinckley went home to Our Father in Heaven yesterday, at the age of 97.
He has been the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints since 1995. He served as an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ from 1961 to 1995. He was the 15th President, Prophet, Seer and Revelator for the LDS church.
President Hinckley and his wife, Marjorie Pay Hinckley were married 67 years before her death in 2004. They had 5 children.
President Hinckley is attributed to helping bring the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints out of relative obscurity. During his presidency the LDS church reached the benchmark where there were more members outside of the United States than inside.
He also started the "Perpetual Education Fund" which offers loans for education in 39 third world countries. To date 27,000 people have received degrees and professional certifications. The funds come from LDS member donations specifically for the program. All donated funds are able to go directly to the loans because the administrative work is done by volunteers.
While he was the Prophet, Prs. Bush awarded him the Medal of Freedom for inspiring "millions and has led efforts to improve humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and education funding across the globe."
He wrote around a dozen books, but two that I highly recommend for everyone would be:I got to meet this great man in Kirkland, Oh back in 1984 when he was an Apostle and I was a missionary. Kirkland, OH played a major role in our church's history, so when the city planned its 150th anniversary as a city, the LDS church was there to join in on the festivities. A lot of the LDS Church leaders were there to speak.
The man behind me in the picture below (the one with the gray hair, sticking his tongue out for the camera) was another Apostle who became Prophet a year after the picture was taken. Next to President Hinckley is his amazing wife, Marjorie.
I'd say "Rest in Peace", but I doubt anyone who was as active as him in this life will get much "rest" in the next.;~D

I am always interested in other religions. Thank~you for posting all that information. I am sorry that you lost someone so important to your faith. It is always hard to loose such a strong anchor. I am sure that someone equally strong will step up to fill his shoes. It will not be the same, but then that is not to be expected.
Shalom~Adoniah
