Well, if you do, find out he's still playing football! I was checking out today's birthdays and I was amazed to see his name among the active players. It's his 42nd birthday, and he's playing for Vasco Da Gama, in Brazil. Not only does he ply, but he is 10th with the best goal average in Brasileirão 2007 (0.60 goals per game) and 16th that needs less time to score in Brasileirão 2007. He scored every 109 minutes.

Yes, it's Romario de Souza Faria I'm talking about. Last time I saw him it was in a beach football world cup a few years ago, but I had no idea he's still playing.

I'm sure your memories of Romario aren't the most pleasant... He won The World Cup in USA 94 when they beat Italy on penalty kicks.

What makes me sad is that some people haven't even heard of him... That's just why I started this discussion on hid birthday: maybe some younger people, who haven't seen him play, will at least browse his name on the Internet and find out who he is and what he did for football.

People never heard of Romario? That's weird... Except they were born after 1996 :P

Though he is a difficult character (lots of fights, arguments etc) he sure is one of the 90's football legends... I know he is still active and that he scored more than 1000 goals but FIFA didn't recognize his record and he appear to have a little less than 1000 and his goal is to reach 1000 before retiring. he was also playing in australia a couple of years ago I think...

I'm afraid he is. On the Wikipedia page, it only says he played for Vasco da Gama during the 2007-2008 season, not that he played through all the reason. If you check out Vasco's current squad http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_de_Regatas_Vasco_da_Gama#Current_squad you will see that Romario is not there. Even more, if you visit the official Vasco site, you can see all the current players: http://www.crvascodagama.com/index.php?display=FUTEBOL-9

Romario was really a great player to watch. More than anything else he was an amazing goal scorer. He ball control and finish were exquisite. But, I thought his tongue used to get him into trouble ever so often and thus he played less than what he could have played for Brazil. Cheers! Ram
