Lactose intolerant??

I was wondering if anyone knew what it feels like or how sick you get if you are lactose intolerant? I had some ice cream sunday evening and by 11 that night i had stomach cramps and it was gurgling, In the morning I had the runs and by the end of the day I was feeling better. But it didn't seem like the flu, Just a sulfur burping and stomach cramps. I don't drink milk so i have no idea if i am lactose intolerant. I don't like milk so I don't drink it but i have a little in my coffee in the morning and it seems to run through me as well but i have always put that off as the caffeine! Any suggestions??

What you feel are the same with what I felt everytime I drink milk. I am also lactose intolerant. Luckily, anmum has less lactose so I don't experience that when I take it. Just avoid dairy products so that you won't have to experience the same sufferings again.

How long have you been lactose intolerant? Since you were a child or did it develop later in life?

I think I had it in college becuase I also developed gastritis/ulcer. Its more severe coz i had gastroenteritis more than a year ago,

Check the date of the icecream .Milk items when slightly old, gives rise to similar problems that you have mentioned. It is not necessary that you are lactose intolerant.If you have milk sweet on a totally hungry stomach too this problem can occur.Now that the worst part is over, see that you have some proper hydration in the form of electral.If it is not available at home take a litre of water add 1 pinch of iodized salt, and 1 tsp of sugar and drink this instead of plain water.You ca have some black tea with lemon juice mixed in it.

You're definitively more sensitive and for one reason or other the ice cream affected you more. Ice creams are very delicate products that can get contaminated. Milk intolerance may be developed in adult age so if uyou have reasons to believe consult your doctor.

Thanks I think I am going to have to. That means a big change in my diet. I eat alot of cheese but cheese doesn't seem to affect me. Only Ice cream....oh well we shall see thanks for the response

my guess is you had food poisoning as you are not a new born baby. If you were than I would say there is a chance but as you are not chances are you are fine. if you are lactose intolerant you wont be able to eat anything with milk, cheese in it and lots if things have them so you would have found out ages ago.

No one else was sick and we all had the same things to eat, Plus i thought you could develop it at a later age.

hmm that sounds like a dilemma. I love ice cream and dairy stuff, I can't imagine how tormenting it would be to be lactose intolerant. Talk to a doctor to find out what your loctose situation could be, and maybe try soy made dairy products, or dairy-free coffee creamers.

thanks i might have to try the soy stuff. I don't know how i am not going to be able to eat ice cream. I love the stuff!!!

I thk most likely you might feel bloated and all sorts of funny expressions? lactose intolerance is due to the unable to break down lactose to simple sugars. That means your body is unable to digest lactose. These molecules may still stay in your intestine or move along. If it move along, that is good. If it doesn't, somethings may happen.

You can become lactose intolerant at any age. I drank milk my whole life, and then I quit drinking it for a few months the next time I had any I found I could not tolerate it at all. 5 years ago I couldn't even eat mashed potatoes because of the milk you use to make them, nor cereal with milk. My symptoms were horrible!! My daughter (a Dr) suggested that I re-start out very slowly trying to get my body used to drinking milk again. I started out with 1/4 teaspoon a day, with other food. Then after doing that a week or so, I increased it to 1/2 a teaspoon for a while. After letting my body get readjusted to milk again, I can now eat cereal with milk, and anything with milk in it...including pudding and ice cream!! I don't know if this works for everybody, but it sure worked well for me, and I had terrible symptoms for a long time from it. Lactose intolerance isn't the same as a true allergy, so I felt safe in trying to readjust my tolerance for milk. I think the key was starting off on very, very small doses of milk, sticking to that low dose for a good while, and then increasing slowly and letting it adjust and get used to it.

You can develop Lactose Intolerance later in life. My sister became Lactose Intolerant at the age of 50. But I am not sure that is the problem. I am more inclined to think you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). With IBS (which I have) you can not always tell what will and will not upset your stomach. Sometimes a food item can give you cramps and diarrhea and other times the same item won't. On the other hand there are probably items that are predictably not helpful if you have IBS and should be removed from the diet. My mother has IBS and her doctor gave her a list of foods she shouldn't eat. I actually disagree with some of them. But that's neither here nor there. I have, to some extent, have my IBS under control. I think what does help is increasing foods that are high in alkalide and low in acid. Every day I have Activia yogurt for lunch along with two bites each of canteloupe, honey dew melon, watermelon and pineapple. I have found this very helpful to my condition. What you SHOULD do is keep a food diary. Keep track of what you eat and when your stomach gets upset. That way you will be able to find what you can't eat. Good luck!
