Have you ever eaten food that's been left out over night?

Last night I made myself a can of soup for dinner and didn't eat the whole thing. I had put it all in one bowl thinking I would get hungry later on and finish eating it. I put it on the kitchen table and forgot about it since I never did get hungry.
Do you think it's ok to eat it after it's been sitting out over night? Have you eaten food that has been left out over night that never made it into your refrigerator?

I guess it would depend on how cold is it in your house. I would say it probably isn't a good idea. You never know what kind of bacteria could have grown on it over night. I've never been brave enough to try it, I've got 3 young kids, I can afford to be sick.

I'd have to agree as well. With all the germs now days flaoting around I'd never eat something that sat out more than a couple hours actually. But then I don't usually eat any leftovers. HAHAHAHA!!

I keep my apartment on the cooler side but even at that I took a look at the soup and sort of went..."nahhhh" and tossed it. I don't feel like getting sick right now.

LOL yea I do it all the time LOL mind you with things like pizza, calzones, potato skins etc...I dont know about soup....What type of soup is it? If its a cream soup I'd be alittle hesitant I think but if its a clear broth type soup then sure I would..I'd just make sure I boiled it to heat it up...

It was the clear broth type of soup but after looking at it for a few minutes I just couldn't eat it. Maybe it was just the thought that it had sat out all night. I made a sandwich instead...lol....

I eat all of the left overs in my refrigerator. Sometimes if it weren't for those I would have nothing to eat. I usually make more than I can eat anyway.

I have a few times but not with soup. I forgot about the left over chicken noodle soup I left on the counter just the other day and when I opened it the next morning, it didn't smell all too good so I dumped it. I didn't want to waste it but I didn't want to get sick either.
I would be weary!

Because I was a culinary arts major... and I know about Food and food born illnesses... No.
I get so weirded out when people leave frozen foods out to thaw in the room temperature room. My friend thawes stuff in the microwave one day. ack! Oh and leaving food out then eating it? yeah that's not for me.

Occasionally we forget to put leftovers in the fridge but usually we still eat them. We're vegan so there's no fear of dairy or meat or anything like that in it spoiling...we've never had any ill effects from eating the food after having sat out.

We value so much of our food, since we are one of those "have nots" here in my country. As long as the food's are not foul-smelling or spoiled, we'd eat it. As long as we know it is clean, we'll take it.
I guess that somehow depends on you make out for a living, but I do wonder what happens on some other poor countries and families that don't have anything for them to eat..

No, I don't eat food that was supposed to go in the fridge but was left out overnight. I'm scared we would get sick from it. I just throw it away if it was accidentally left out.

Yes, did that two days ago.
I love soup!
My boyfriend did not eat his. It was half empty.
So I reheated it the next morning, and I am still alive.LOL.
Joking.
But, it all has to do with the weather and the tempature of your room, where the food is.
If you have fish or meat.(carefull with fish)
If it is summer, warm then I would not eat it anymore.
But, right now it is okay.
I think i will eat some soup know too, I am getting another soup kraving!(attack)
Take care.

No I would not eat it after sitting out all night. Especially now that it is winter and you have your heat on. The house is too warm to be leaving the food out and then eating it. The warmth would have festered it. I make sure I put my leftovers in the fridge right after we finish eating, that way I don't forget about them. And if it is something I don't think we want to eat the next day, I put it into the freezer for another day.

I totally know what you mean! I've done the same thing more than once. I'm not one to waste food. I love eating and hate to see anything go to waste. However, I don't think it's a good idea to eat the soup that was left over even though you had it in a covered and sealed container. Certain food items in the soup would need to be refrigerated anyway and there's a lot of bacteria that could've collected overnight even in a sealed container. Your health is at stake here! (LOL) I'd suggest just tossing it. I know it's a shame to waste it, but really it'll save you food poisoning or worse. There are some good bacteria and some bad. Sometimes it hard for your stomach to break down and destroy the bad bacteria. It's better not to take any chances. This is a very interesting discussion and thought!

As a rule I would not eat anything left out overnight. Not that is may have gone bad but because I do not know what unseen bug or fly may have taken a few mouthfuls!!

it's all according how high the air conditioner was on that night and after boiling soup i would think it would be alright.it's sort of like that story where mayonaise goes bad if you leave it out or butter i have friends that are chef's and they tell me it's not true but of course if you leave it out for a day or so it will turn but not the butter.and of course it's all according how hungry you are and if your willing to take that chance. buon appetite !!!

Yes I did... many times.
Actually... if you go back 50 years... not too many people had a refrigerator. I was 16 when my parents got their first refrigerator.
As long as the food has been cook... and it is covered to protect it from things like flies... it should not be a problem.
However... room temperature has also something to do with it. I would not leave it out of the refrigerator if you had more than 20 degrees celcius inside your home.

as long as the food is not yet spoiled, i will eat it. my mother taught me not to waste any food because there are many poor people in the world that do not have something to eat.

When I first saw the title of this discussion, I was suppose to answer, "yes, I always eat left overs" but when I read the description, my opinion changed. If it was refrigerated, I will probably eat it, but since it was not, might as well throw it or if your not into throwing foods maybe just reheat it.
