I just started taking a Japanese class. Anyone want to help me learn the language? Any advice or suggestions? I appreciate all your help.

I'm learning Japanese too! My advice is try not to get frustrated with it... because it can be very complicated. They have 3 different writing systems and its hard to memorize them. Practice writing them a lot, and practice speaking with other people. If you like anime or anything like that it also helps to watch it in Japanese.

I am learning Hiragana right now and can't believe there's still Katakana and Kanji to learn later on. I think I'm hanging in there...LOL. Thanks for the advice and good luck in your course!

Where are you taking the class at? I've always wanted to learn a foreign language, and I've wanted to learn Japanese in particular for the past few years. One thing I do suggest is listening to Japanese music and watching Japanese movies and television shows to help you get accustomed to hearing the language. After you start learning more, you can even try to translate some of it. Not the most academic way of doing it, but it's what I do (though I'm not taking a class). Good luck, hope you enjoy the class.

I am taking the Japanese class at a nearby community college. I'm going to start off with some Japanese movies/TV and see how that goes. Thank you for the suggestions.

My best suggestion is to just stick with it and dont be afraid to learn your katakana (I have too many friends who know so much japanese yet dont know how to read katakana, which is relatively easy ^_^) Oh, and get used to memorizing kanji, which is like writing chinese but a little bit easier :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I just learned hiragana and am about to learn katakana. Hopefully, I don't get the two mixed up. :) Although I won't learn kanji until next semester, I will probably get a head start and start learning it on my own in the summer. That way, I won't be completely confused and overwhelmed when it comes time for Japanese level 2.
