What does being Australian mean to you?

Australia Day Walkers - While brisk walking early on a public holiday may not seem very Australian, apparently it is. Across the country thousands turned out to take part in such an event

I am amazed that being Australian means getting up super early (while it is still dark) to go for a 5km run/walk on a public holiday is considered a symbol of being Australian. Granted, I was one of the tens of thousands of people who partook in such an activity over the Australia Day weekend, but I still question how this represents being Australians. I thought the stereotypical Aussie was a big fat beer guzzling couch potato? (In the nicest possible way0

To be honest with you I am not really sure! I am an Australian that has been living and working overseas in three different countries in the last three years. From personal reactions to me by the many people I deal with; maybe being Australian means that we are seen as easygoing; laid back honest; and reliable. One thing I do notice that is very different between people back home and the many I face today is that Australians are far more open and upfront. We tell it how it is! Call a spade a spade! Maybe I should really give this far more thought as I guess I am somewhat of an Ambassador for my country!

Yes we certainly do tell it how it is. There is no point mucking around with things though is there! I think that all the qualities you described are part of what makes us Australian. Thanks for sharing
