Tasks we DON'T like!

Painting - I hate painting but it must sometimes be done - this is a wall that has been painted, re-painted, and is now drywall mudded and ready to be painted again.

Ok, I love doing home repairs and remodeling but one task I hate is painting. Now over the years I've painted hundreds of walls but my one favorite was the entire wall I painted in a waterfall scene (I love waterfalls). Well, today is the day I am determined to finish painting my new bedroom. It's in a walkout basement and the walls were a dark tan and ohhhh the ceiling black - makes for a very dark dreary room. I've been at this for nearly 2 weeks and at this point this picture shows what 2.5 of the walls still look like - ok the white is drywall mud as the seams weren't mudded and there were many spots that needed repairing so doing it all. I'll post a picture when I'm finished but a little hint we're going light lavendar all around:) So, what task is it that you dislike whether it be home, work, or whatever. Lets vent a little and share our dislikes.

I hate painting too. Probably because it's a very finicky job, and I just don't have the patience you need to do a really nice job. I admire people like you who can take on these projects yourself. I put them off so long till something absolutely has to be done. I'll look forward to seeing the finished project, although, I'm a little concerned about the lavender.....

Oh I know what you mean - I don't like dishes when it was just my son and I. I am blessed now though - where we moved there is a dish washer and I feel like I'm in heaven. Still do larger pans but most everything will go in and just turn the knob. LOL - my way of folding laundry: hang up my 'important' things and leave the rest in a basket just taking out as needed. I had 4 children at home at one time and it didn't take long for me to delegate that task - as soon as they were old enough each one was responsible for folding and taking care of their own cloths.

Ok, call me an air-head I just posted comment on the wrong response - that's what I get for rushing :( LOL - got trim work done on one wall so am taking a break. I'm sure this will be an all day job the way I go about it. Oh well, snowing and nothing else pressing at this moment.

I guess painting fits for a man's job, as I do like it in my case. What I don't like was the cleaning of dishes, sweeping or vacuuming the floors. As much as I'd hate to do the laundry, I decided to learn the chore since it's also a PLUS for a guy like me!;)

Yes, that's what I also did. I'm the eldest of three siblings and my father works abroad so it was me who became the second in command whenever my mother is away also. I learned to cook, wash my clothes (even by hands, since we don't have any washing machines then), press clothes and even clean the entire house. I guess it only shows how people can adjusts to their status, I'm glad that your kids did support you in many ways -then and until now!;)

Oh my youngest is 16 now and the only one not married - he has picked up my bad habits with laundry, he does wash and dry his own but he doesn't fold and even gets upset when I fold his cloths - he like the wrinkled, lived in look :( it drives me crazy but I figure he's a young man now and if that's the way he wants to look then it's up to him. He is however a very very good cook and has gone beyond mom and knows more about cars than I do.

Oh dear - I was/am a single mother and at one time had 4 children, 3 of them boys, at home plus I worked a full-time job. I decided my son's were not going to be like my ex-husband. In our house there were no 'girl jobs' or 'boys jobs'. My son's learned as young teen-agers how to cook, clean, and do laundry. In my oldest son's case it was a good thing because his wife couldn't boil a pan of water when they got married. I and my daughter also do construction, auto repairs, and lawnwork.

Sounds like you have the project all under control and sounds very pretty. Please post a picture when your project is completed. I don't like cleaning toilets at home. It's a waste of time since it's a room that is used over and over again..lol Otherwise I'm content at home with almost anything I am doing.

I don't mind the toilet but do understand your dislike - I use "The Works" and it cleans really good and really quick. Right now I'm cleaning 4 bathrooms but only do them once a week, 2 of the bathrooms seldom get used right now but I still do them. Break is over, back to work but will post picture when finished although it may be late tonight - next wall I have to move entertainment center and 2 six foot book shelves :(

Oh I also don't like painting walls and ceilings. That task I can delegate to some persons and then pay for their work. Well, at home I can do washing dishes and washing of clothes, the washing machine is a great help. What I dislike most is the ironing of clothes and folding the clothes. Its good that now,we have a laundry woman and she does the ironing of clothes too, but I have to pay for her services.

Oh a laundry woman would be a great help - I too hate ironing but only do it about once a year now, I buy only wash and wear and just take them right out of the drier and hang them up. If they do get wrinkled I just throw them back in the drier :( shame on me.

I'm with you, I don't like painting either. I was going to paint my bedroom months ago, but never did. I really want it painted, but I don't want to do it. When I get started, I'm sure I'll be happy. I'm going to paint it a color called Purple Dragon. (someday) hehe The waterfall scene must of been beautiful. I like waterfalls too. I also like the lavendar color, I bet it's going to look great! Happy painting.lol

Purple is my favorite color, have 2 walls done now :) brake time. It's funny how I came up with this color - new paint wasn't in the budget but landlord had several cans of paint partly used that were a variety of colors - I started mixing like kinds and somehow came up with this. It's really really light, almost white, but when the light shines on it you can tell the difference. Purple dragon sounds great. I would like to someday do another waterfall but will wait until I have my own home again.

I have to agree with you that painting would be one of my least favorite task. That is probably be the reason I have lived in my home almost 12 years and still have rooms that need painting.

I just could not stand the black ceiling most of all - I felt like I was in a cave. Plus seeing as how I'm pretty much living here for free I'm trying to do all I can to help fix the house after my daughter trashed most of it... The ceiling was her work :( so depressing! I'm really drawing this one out and know it's going to be the middle of the night before I get things back where I can actually sleep in here but will be worth the effort.

Good luck to you, because outgrew my enjoyment of painting a long time ago. The last room I painted was my daughters bedroom five years ago. It was small room. Three years later my hubby repainted it. Obviously he wasn't impressed with my slap dash method of paining. Another task I hate is dusting. I hardly ever do it but I know I should.

Yea I would say dusting is right up there close to painting for me too. As for your husband re-doing your painting job I say, "If you can do it better than me go for it" :) but thanks for reminding me I need to dust :( winter is really bad with the furnish running all the time the dust is 10 times as bad as spring and summer.

I loved to paint when younger but I have found that I don't have a lot of patience for it any more. I painted the living room and CJ's room last summer. It wasn't too bad but it seemed like it took forever. I have to admit that I'm alot better painter than my husband; he gets paint on things that shouldn't be painted and gets it all over himself. I can usually paint without getting a drop on my body.

Oh I know that one well - my daughter and her now husband 22 & 23 respectively are at the top of that list. Neither of them know how to clean up after themselves - you know it's bad when 5 & 2 year old children do a better job than their parents.

Hey, you want me to come over and paint? I don't mind it too much..in fact I wish I had some money to do a bit of sprucing up in my apartment...actually more than just a bit. When the electricians had to rewire all the apartments they left big gaping holes when they were rewiring, eventually the plasterer came in and plastered up all the holes...but now my apartment looks strange as say the one wall of my living room is a nice aqua color but has the stark white plaster where they filled in the holes...would also have to paint other areas as well...those walls are white but not the same color white as the plaster...so like I said my apartment looks a tad strange..LOL Mmm....tasks I hate to do...going through piles of old papers to see what I can throw out and dusting are two tasks I can't stand

i really really dislike cleaning the bathroom. all that muck that accumulates is just GROSS. but i have no choice. we alternate on bathroom duties and guess whose turn it is coming up next. mine, moi, me. yuck but i guess i really appreciate the feeling of a clean bathroom. perhaps i could clean it everyday like in hotels which would make the task easier each time. but i think if i had to clean everyday i'd go mad too. besides since i work i don't think i'd have the energy to do it everyday. cleaning the bathroom includes wiping down the shower screen, scrubbing the sink and floors, cleaning the drain hole, disinfecting the toilet bowl and clearing out the dustbin there. what a chore!

This is going to sound strange but it seems like I already responded to this but it's not showing on my discussion :( mylot gremlins again I am thinking. I don't mind the bathroom but do often wonder about those things you can buy to put in the shower that you just push a button or something and it automatically cleans for you. My luck of course someone would leave the shower curtain open and it would do the whole bathroom but hey that might work for you :)

I was the same way, the oldest in the family and expected to help Mom with all the household chores. I think that's a little of why I enjoy doing so many other things now - anything to get me out of the old tasks. There is no way on earth I would ever have refused my mom also and even today would never refuse to do anything she asks.

I loathe washing large cooking pots/trays. I dislike shoveling snow and ice. Stripping a bed and putting new sheets and quilts on it also irritates me. I also dislike breaking down boxes for recycling. (prefer to use the boxes as containers for other papers)

Goodness, you do have a list and I will agree with you on all accounts except for stripping and making the bed. I think it's fun to strip the bed and although not as much fun I enjoy putting clean bedding on because I just keep reminding myself how nice it's going to feel crawling in between fresh sheets. I also don't mind shoveling snow as long as there's no time presure - if I'm rushed and 'have to do it now' then I hate doing it.

The task I dislike the most is doing the dishes. We haven't upgraded to getting a dishwasher yet but I hope we do soon. Family of 7 here so it gets to be a bit much, esp on the weekends when everyone is home all day. The other one I hate doing is folding the laundry. No one seems to be able to get a pair of jeans or shirt out without unfolding it all so I have to go back and fold them all over again.

Hi Faith. I love the colour, it looks so fresh and cool. Have you moved? Last time I heard from you you had moved to your ex- husband's house and you were living upstairs. Your daughter was also living there with your grandchildren. Is she still there now that she's married? The brown walls and black ceiling sound really off, so glad you've changed that. What a downer. Tell me, what's a "walk out basement"? I quite enjoy chores around the house but there's not much I can do these days due to my back being such a drag. I can't go up ladders either. So of course, during really bad storms, my kitchen ceiling leaks and there are birds nesting in my chimney as I type. I'll have to get them out somehow before winter. Maybe if I bang on the flue inside they'll get the hint. I've already spoken to them severely from outside. Naturally they ignored me.

Ok, kinda long story but short version - still at ex-husbands, daughter got mad before she got married and moved out, ex decided it would be best (and I agreed) if Shane (my son, not his) and I moved to the basement. There's 3 bedrooms, livingroom, space for kitchen, laundry for the house, full bathroom (right across from my bedroom which is really nice) and another fireplace - it's like our own apartment. A walkout basement is underground on 3 sides but the fourth side is open - we have huge picture windows in 2 of the bedrooms and 2 sets of French doors in the living room. Not as bright as the loft where I was but this is much more convient. With just the 3 of us here we still share the kitchen and usually just do meals together - I fix enough for all of us and everyone just eats when they want.

Oh i also love doing home repairs and i also love painting...Some people don't like to paint and i supposs its just like anything else ,some things you like and some you don't....Oh your water fall sounds lovely..I have never tried anything like that,it sounds like lots of fun...Ok I will tell you what i don't like, but first let me tell you why i like to paint..It is because painting makes a huge difference in any room, you can repair this or that and thats good but once you have painted a room it makes a huge differenc...Its like a thing that catches you eye when you walk into a room...I also love your color choice, light lavender..Ok now for the things i hate..its blinds i hate hanging blinds, i do it, but i hate it...I also hate hanging wall paper, i do it, and like the results but i hate doing it...I have some memory books i am making for each of my children and i hate doing that,i have a hard time making decisions....I hate to dust...I love doing dishes, weird huh? I have a dishwasher but i enjoy washing dishes.....While we are on the subject i have a small round window that i need to install,i am thinking of tackling it, do you think that will be hard? I don't know..

I don't really mind painting specially if someone else does the rest specially sanding. My whole house needs painting right now, but I"m not sure when we will get to that we need to have some extra money for paint. I don't like vacuuming or ironing that much. And dusting is right there too LOL I"ll be waiting for the pictures when it's finished:)

I tell her I am going to clean it but I always make up some exucese as to why I havent cleaned it. Even if some of those excuses are true. Still im going have to do it soon or later before my mom explodes.

Dishwasher - Of all the household chores, i don't like washing dishes
Hello dear faith c",) i would say you are very talented to do these things on your own. I love painting but just don't have the talent to do it perfectly. I love doing repairs but just couldn't do it right so i leave the works to my dad hahaha but i'll be glad to assist him. Honestly what i hate to do is washing dishes, just let me do anything else in the house except that..lol i don't really know why but it's just me.c",)
