fetlock injury on foal 3 days old

hi our foal was not long born and hours after we found what we thought to be a fetlock injury we called the vet and after hours of xrays and one hell of a long night the vet decided to plaster the whole rear leg as safety and will change the plaster every week for 6 weeks do's this sound right and will this harm the horses abillity to become a strong race horse
