How do you improve your reading speed?

I love reading, but I read quite slow. Many friends and teachers suggested me not to read word by word when I asked how to read faster. However, it is not very easy. I practised over and over again and at last I had to admit I do not have the ability to read passage by passage. I do not understand the article when I read line by line. I tried to improve by practice because I love reading so much that I want to read as much as I can, while time is always not enough when the books in my study room become more and more. Do you have good methods to improve reading speed, even a little bit? Would you mind shalling your wonderful idea with all the people in myLot?

when i was in highschool i was privileged to enrol in a reading course of the fastest reader Dr. Teresa F. Calderon. and she taught us the same thing your teachers told you to. Don't read word for word. Try to locate the sentence (usually ending in a period (.)) Then move your eyes slowly, as if gliding it from the beginning to end but make sure to pick up major points, important words that would form the general thought of the sentence. I wasn't much of a reader before. But with that course, i grew a fondness for books. And now i read alot.

Thanks for your advice. I will try to practise what you teach me to do. It must make sense. I will learn to skim and understand it at the same time.

i love reading too...but if you really wanted to read faster the only solution to that is by practicing it...the more practice you do the more you will improve on it...but i dont think it is that necessary because understanding what you read is far more important that just reading without understanding what you have read...

Yes. Comprehension is always No.1 important in reading, and 2nd thing for me is quantity, that means reading speed. :)

The more you read, the more your speed increases. However, I have heard of speed reading courses. I believe that most of these speed reading courses consist of skimming the page and not reading every single word.

Got it. Maybe I need to know how to skim.
