A transexual on a reality show

In the Italian version of Big brother one of the contestants is a transexual. Obviously this has started a debate on television. Is it good to put a transexual on a reality show?
Some people think it's bad coz it's like "treating her like a strange animal at the zoo" and they have fear she could be harassed
Others think is a good occasion to make people watch that a transexual is just a normal person.
I can see both faces of the medal
What do you think?

On the one hand, contestants are (or should be) aware of what could happen when they hang their lives out for everyone to see. So if the transsexual is comfortable in doing that, then he/she must be willing to face the possible ramifications. I'm not a fan of reality shows. I think that some of those people, once they get some face time, end up going over the top and the "reality" turns into a caricature.

I think she's comfortable and she's well prepared to possible racist attacks. I've seen only an episode out of curiosity but she seems the most "normal" and stable person in the house. But another person in that situation could go really bad.

I think anyone on this type of show is being treated like a strange animal in a zoo. :P
I think it's kind of neat anytime you can see a transsexual in popular media, simply because there is such a negative public opinion of them in general. Of course, depending upon the actions of the individual, the public opinion might just become more negative. Still, I think it is a chance to show that transsexuals are people just like anyone else.
I can see why people would think it was degrading, but well, like I said, I see being on that type of show as equally degrading to anyone... and she did agree to it. :P

"everyone is being treated like a strange animal in a zoo"
Yeah that's true. They choice the strangest human being possible to make more audience and everyone is mocked, but I hope there wouldn't be too much unhealthy interest in Silvia, the trans

If it's treating her like she's an animal in a zoo, it's doing so in the exact same way as all the other animals in the zoo.
A lot will depend on how they portray her. The scenes are all edited, so they can make people look bad if the producers want to. Hopefully they will treat her fairly and the viewers will see that she's just a normal person.

I think that anyone on a reality show is treated the same. The fact that he/she aggreed to be on the show is good enough for me. If Transexuals as a whole disaggree then they should talk to their fellow TS. I'm sure that she just wants to prove that she is just like everyone else. Just my two cents!
Take care, Terry

I dont think its a bad thing and I dont think that it is a good thing. I agree that it is good to show a transexual person on a reality show so that it can show people that they are not bad people, so I would say I look at it at both views, dont really know which one the most though... :?
