"The Black Echo" is a potent inaugural novel by Michael Connelly. It introduces a fascinating despondent character, named Harry Bosch. An L.A.P.D. homicide detective.
The adventure begins when a bodys' discovered dead inside a drainpipe. Bosch is called out to what seems like a routine drug addict, death. Yet, at his arrival he finds a startling revelation. The deceased is a fellow "TunnelRat" from his Vietnam days. Disturbingly his death, under close inspection, proves not to be of an overdose but the result of malicious foul play.
Bosch now becomes obsessed with unraveling the reason, of why someone has gone to great labor, to coverup this homicide. In the process Bosch is confronted with nightmares of his Vietnam past and reveals a critical conspiracy of crime.
Rightfully, Connelly won the EdgarAward for BestFirstNovel. This novel is a deliciously riveting narrative. It cements Bosch as a superb character that resonates with physical grit and despondent wit. He's cleverly crafted, not merely a depressive soul, but having a troublesome past, that authenticates it. We feel the calamity attained in his violent Vietnam days.
With great detail, his complexity is divulged. Laying down a sublime foundation for the dozen novel, "HarryBoschSeries".
