Black Labs

I have a six month old black lab puppy. She is huge. How fast and big do these things grow? She is such a lover and a very good dog, I just want to know what to expect. My husband says she is going to be huge but I'm still curious as I have seen medium and large sized full grown labs.

Typically, a Black Lab will reach around 24" in height, and will weigh anywhere from 55-80 pounds. That is a pretty huge dog. It really depends on the size and build of the parents. Black labs can also get very heavy if not maintained on a well balanced diet. They are though, one of the most even tempered, nicest dogs there are. Very loyal and loving, and great with kids. They sometimes though forget their size, and can be bery clumsy until they are about a year and a half old. Hope that answers your questions.

The "teething" usually depends on the breed. I have had heelers that never chewed on anything other than rawhide chews and for some reason, they would chew on blankets(MY 16 year old red heeler still does the blanket thing)... I have a boxer/border collie cross that didn't stop chewing on inappropriate things until he was about two years old. It varies with breed,, but plan on it until she's at least a year or so old.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the clumsy thing. She also chews on literally everything. I know dogs go through teething but my goodness does it ever stop?

It really depends on their pedigree. Some labs can stop growing at a small size, while others grow to be very big!! I see labs of all shapes and sizes at my work, nothing surprises me anymore lol. You should just be reayd to have a big dog on your hands, your husband might be right! How big are her feet? Sometimes when a puppy has large feet, it means they still have some growing to do, to fit into the feet! =P lol

If her paws are big then your busband is right, you can look forward to a big dog! I'm 5'9" too, and your husband is also probably pretty acurate on that measurement too! It'll probably be able to reach your shoulders, or just under them.

Her feet are huge, I think that's why my husband says she will be so big. I am 5'9" and he said she will probably be able to jump up and put her paws on my shoulders by the time she is done growing. She is adorable and I don't mind her size I was just wondering what I have to look forward to.

Labs can get pretty big (not as big as a Mastiff though!) She should be done growing around 10 months (height, she will still put on weight). She will be a lover alwasy! Labs are sweethearts and great with kids. Just so you know, labs stay puppies a bit longer than most dogs (meaning she will have those hyper times more often than other dogs). :O)

I know that they can get to be 80+ pounds. They can be a little bit smaller though. How much does she weigh now? I bet she is adorable.

I bet she is going to be a handful, but it sounds like she is a very loving dog.

Our black lab is 2 years old now and is still very much a puppy. She'll lay down by us when we watch TV or a movie, but as soon as we move or come home, she's raring to play. She seemed to be full height and weight right around one year old. She is not as bulky (round around the middle) as many labs I see, but she is definitely healthy and muscular. She's about 2.5 feet high and 4 feet long. (That's just a guesstimate - I'm not at home where I can look at her), and probably about 70 pounds-(to heavy and big for me to hold her while standing on a scale) :D -Tink

I have a golden retriever (same general family) who is almost 18 months old and he is nearly 100 pounds. He is very loving and playful but will knock you down when excited. There is a group called petdogs in yahoo groups. I joined when we first got Rusty at 7 weeks and they were very helpful in learning about the breed and all of the things I needed to find out about raising a big dog. I have only had small dogs in the past, like maltese, so had a lot to learn. You might want to give it a try. There are lots of friendly folks there including breeders who are anxious to help.

When my black lab was a puppy she had pretty large paws and a very large belly to go with them. We thought she was going to be huge, and now that shes four years old shes fairly large, but she is more broad than tall. I think it just depends on the build of the dog, some labs I've seen are more tall and skinny as opposed to the more stout. They do grow fast though, so make sure you enjoy her as a puppy because before long she will be 80 pounds and laying on top of you like a baby.
