My little guy is sick

Poor thing has had a cold for a week that just won't go away. He has a terrible cough that is keeping him up nights. His little nose is all red and sore because it's been running like Niagara Falls. He will hardly eat anything. And a low grade fever that comes and goes. I've done everything. I prop up his mattress- he rolls to the low end. He has a vaporizer in his room, VapoRub on his chest, lots of water- all I can get him to drink. I give him Tylenol to make him comfortable when his fever goes up. I use saline drops to clear his nose- when he'll let me. I took him to the doctor and he does not have an ear infection or signs of pneumonia. What else can I do for him? He's only 17 months old, poor baby.

it is so tough to see our kids sick, we wish we could take their illness for them but the best we can do is make them comfortable as possible. i give my kids special treats when they are sick.

I feel for you. All 3 of our kids have been sick with one thing or another for weeks. We all went through a 24 hour vomiting experiance and various head cold symptoms. Currently the baby is getting over an eye cold and has crusty eyes and my soon to be 3 year old is now getting it. ah kids...lol. You are doing everything right, sounds like you just have to ride it out.

Thanks, I know it will pass on its own, but it's just so hard to see him miserable and not be able to fix it for him.

ensure that he is warm at night when sleeping. the blanket should be covering his chest. when having a fever, keep his forehead cool by using a wet handkerchief. hmm i don't think propping up the mattress is that good an idea. when we have fever, we tend to have a bad headache so it might be the same for the little ones too. give him some cough medicine too as stated. since there's no sign of it being worse, just ensure that he's kept warm. at this time, he definitely won't be wanting to eat as his appetite won't be there. you can also heat up a little olive oil and massage him with that. here at my place, when kids have diarrhoea and cold, doing that keeps the body warm especially when the oil is heated. of course you must let the oil warm and apply. try doing that before he goes to sleep. he'll feel comfortable and sleep longer in the night, thus you won't have to wake up often. this seems to work over here; my sister did that recently too to her son when he had a cold and really bad diarrhoea. hope your son is recovers

Those headaches, in adults and children are caused or made worse by pressure in the head when you lay down. Being propped up a little relieves some of that pressure. Since he is so young I can't give him cold medicine since it is not safe and most medicines for children have been pulled from the market.

yes true, i notice that we tend to have a headache if we lay down for too long. you have a point there. and yep, giving cold medicine to children that young is not that good. so it's good that you stay away from it for a while. i hope everything works out well and that your son is ok.
