The experience I have had with owning a shih tzu is that they are very independent dogs. Mine likes to be left alone most of the time. An occasional rubbing, ear scratching, is about all he wants. He doesn't like to be held, brushed, or oogled over. The more you try to love him when he's not in the mood, the uglier his mood gets. He starts growling, then showing teeth, then snapping. I have also heard they are a naturally an ugly natured dog. Mine does like to be outside, listen for noises, watch for any kind of movement, chase squirls, bark (loudly), and guard his space. He also has skin problems and a sensitive stomach. I would suggest thinking very seriously about getting a shih tzu. If you are wanting a loving, lap dog, consider getting something else. I'm sure there are very loving ones out there, but you also chance getting one that isn't a cuddle bug.

Hi Cami_love, I've just bought myself a Shih Tzu which is about 2 months old now. Mine the opposite to yours. My Shih Tzu likes to be held, brushed and the best part likes to take bath. It is a vey loveable dog and likes to cuddle at us. Maybe it is too early to tell because mine is only 2 months old. I will update my Shih Tzu in mylot. Thanks for the sharing.

I'm so glad you got a cuddle bug doggie. I'm sure he will always be that way, considering mine has been a bit grumpy since he was a puppy, and has never changed. I just happened to get one that is not very social. It took me a long time to get used to not being able to cuddle my doggie, but I love on him as much as I can when he is in the mood to be loved. We joke and say that he is a grumpy old man trapped in a little doggie body. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention in my last post...he doesn't like to be moved either. If he is at the foot of my bed and I try to scoot him over, he growls at me. But he's sooooo cute, it's hard to get upset with him.

shih tzu - my cute little shih tzu
Shih Tzus are really very loving dogs. Others find these dogs high maintenance considering its nature. They need frequent grooming which you can actually do on your own. However, you need to see your vet from time to time for other important things about your dog. You have to give your shih tzu a bath frequently. Be sure to buy a brush for your dog's hair.

You are right to say that Shih Tzus are a loving dog because they like to be hugged and touched. Sometime I find it too playful. Thanks for the comment.

My mother inlaw has one, I think she is 12 now, she named her Misty Rose. She had to be one of the sweetest prettiest little dogs I ever saw. She was well behaved as well and good with kids. Good luck, if I ever get a dog I want a Shih Tzu

That's the reason why I looked for a Shih Tzu. I've found mine which I bought from a pet shop. It is just like a toy dog and my Shih Tzu is very playful. He likes to be touched and hugged. Please get yours soon.

I owned a shih tzu named chucky! He is a pretty pretty cute charming dog. If youre the i-always-hug my dog person, then shih tzu is the best dog for you coz they are so sweet and wants to be always hugged. However if have ashtma or some allergies, shih tzu is not the breed for you. They tend to shed hairs so if you have a carpeted floor - i hope you enjoy using the vacuum cleaner! Plus you need to take care of the shih tzu's eyes because the hairs would tend to cover it causing teary eyes. You have to own also the best dog-hair comb coz your shih tzu will need that to prevent tangles! a lot of grooming and maintaining right? Goodluck!
