How long does it take to recover from having a C-Section?

My sister in law just gave birth a few days ago in Australia and I was just wondering how long it will take for her to recover from having one. I gave birth naturally and even though I tore badly, it took me about six weeks to fully recover from that. I was just wondering how much more difficult it is after having surgery and how you coped afterwards. Thanks for sharing.

i have had two of them. the first one only took me two weeks to be right back to myself. but with my last one, oh boy it took me forever to feel better. the doctor said that is because i got my tubes tied. and when they do that, they have to pump air into your tubes before they can do tie them. which makes it a bit longer to recover. and with the last one it took me about three months to get better

it is different for everyone. but age has a lot to do with it too. when i had my first one i was all of 23, and with my little girl i was 32. at 23 i snapped back right away. but with my second one not only was i ten years older, but i also got my tubes tied. so i had a few things going against me. but i am happy and would do it all over again to get the most wonderful children i have today

So it does differ with each person. That must of been tough the second one having to take 3 months to recover fully.

I agree. I also got my tubes tied with our 2nd child. My son is a year old now and I am still recovering. I think it takes about 2 years to recover completely. I had a C-section and when you have a section, you are cut through muscles and everything. My stomach is not the same and I am still having trouble fitting in all of my clothes although I am walking and jogging now but jogging is more difficult now since the C-section. I also got my tubes tied with the C-section so that explains the long recovery time.

I had a Cesarean in 2006 & will be having another one around July of this year. For you with 6 weeks, it wont be much different for her :) They had me up & about the following morning, home after about 4 days & then i was doing all my normal things within about 2 weeks. There is still some discomfort & a few things they recommend you not do but your SIL should be ok after a couple of weeks. Everyone kind of healths differently but generally, it's about 4-6 weeks for full healing but you're feeling good within about 2 weeks! I hope that helps & they're really not that bad or that difficult to recover from :)

My first was a natural birth and it took me about 4-5 weeks to recover fully. My second was a C-section and I was up and about in 3 weeks and travelled a week after that. I surprised myself because soon after the C-section I was in such bad shape that I swore if I had a C-section the first time round, I would never have had any more babies. But I recovered quite quickly. But I also feel that it depends on each person. It's been different experiences for different people. Btw...congratulations on the addition to the family.

I had a c-section in 1992. It took me 3-6 months to fully recover. Outside you heal real fast but you need to be careful not to strain yourself and get a hernia. She should not carry heavy things.

Thanks for your response mimatexas. I think she is doing ok at the moment and is being helped by her mother.

sorry I don't really know the exact question to your answer. however, my friend gave birth naturally and it didn't tear badly. she had a epistomacy and it was a neat cut and her gynae was really good at stitiching, so by the second day she could walk around without any pain. and without the need for painkillers. I've heard that it's very important to get a gynae with good stitching skills. that would lessen the pain a lot less. and speed up recovery a lot more.

I was actually wanting to know what the recovery was like for those who had a caesarian birth. My sister inlaw just gave birth a week ago by caesarian and was just wondering how long it took to recover from a major surgery like that. :)

You need at least 6 weeks to recover, after that you start slowly to get into a normal routine. some people feel really great after just a few weeks , but its major surgery and your ligaments and muscles inside have to heal properly , if they dont, you can have a lot of problems later on down the track...You cannot push, pull, lift or strain any of the stomach muscles...Different people have different pain tolerance, but you have to be sure not to use the stomach muscles at all...

Thanks for your comment calais. I assumed that it might take a little longer for some as it is major surgery. I hope my sister in law is able to recover well.

I had a csection with my son and I was up and doing everything less then 2 weeks after having the surgery. I had stunned people at how fast I was up and moving around. I'm due to have another csection March 18th of this year and I'm not worried. I know some people have unfortunate events happen but with me it was a walk in the park. I didnt even take no pain medication because I felt like I could take on the world. Good luck to your sister :)

Wow two weeks to recover, that is great! I don't know why I assumed it takes longer to heal but its good to hear others do recover quickly. Good luck for March 18th and thanks for your response SuperMom :):)

This actually depends on the person. Some women who gave birth normally, took weeks to fully recover...and there are also women, who recovered a few weeks after having a C-section. In my case, 4 hours after giving birth, I was walking already, going to the nursery to visit my little one. I am not sure if there is a specific technique for this. But for me, just like any illness, you shouldn't nurture the pain. Exercise, I heard may help, since it gives you more resistance. Also, a good diet rich in vitamins may help to heal the tissues.
