What is your opinion of car salesmen? Do you trust any of them?

My husband recently had a job at a major car dealer here. The job came to an unfortunate end when he questioned the practices used by the business. Do you feel good about the price you paid for your last car? Did you trust your salesman? Would you go to him personally again? Is the business just getting worse due to low commissions paid to the sales people now and more competition? ...Whit

heck wehn I went o buy my DUrango I never even asked the price I haggled for a good price for mine and a low payment. Nope I never trusted any car sales man they lie worse than lawyers. ANd the poor sales man that try to be good guys get let go the one that sold my son his truck here is no longer with the company figured he was a good guy but not a salesmen! To me a good one would be one that can tell you all about hte vehical you are looking at and tells the truth about it . I mostly know what I am going aftter and if I like what I see I get it always been that way with me and I have drove some pretty good bargins one time even got them to put brand new tires on a car and only paid about $300 for it . long time ago tires cost almost that much so I thought I made a good deal. !

Oh, you drive a hard bargain, I'd like to have you along with me if I ever buy another car haha. Actually, nowadays depending on where you are and the type of car, the commision for the salesman on a new car can be as long as $50. On a used car, it has a lot more play. ...Whit

I don't trust them at all. We bought a car off a friend of our family's who goes to our church. well less than a week later the power locks on the one door don't always work. we tried to get him to fix it and he lied to us saying that's the way it's supposed to be, yada yada yada insert other b.s. here...

Well, there's a predicament. I hope you got some resolve - I don't know what I'd do in this case.

Most car salespeople I do not trust. It's too much about buy this car and we will take care of your every needs and fast. It doesn't happen. I bought a new car last year from a female. Haven't had to contact her about any issues whatsoever as my Mazda suv has been an awesome car. So this time it's been a very good experience. We bought and never returned to the dealer for anything. I better knock on wood that the tires don't fall off my car on my way to work tonight..lol

Unfortunately, it's not the salespeople that take car of you after the car is sold. I hope you continue to have a good experience. Knock on wood too... think positive. whit

no, not really,, especially used car sales people. its a good thing that you can go to carfax.com and get the information from the cars past. it does help somewhat. New cars you can also research very easily before even starting to look. So i say do your homework when it comes to buying a car ,, or anything for that matter.

Have you ever used this website? Just curious? For the new cars, you sure can get the msrp and the invoice price too. The mystery is gone now.

No, I do not trust car salesmen. I personally have never bought a car from any because of this. I prefer to stick to private party sales. I remember when my mom bought a couple of cars (separate times) through dealerships and these people kicked me out of the room because I was 1) under 18 and 2) because I was suspicious of them. But it was mostly because they knew I was suspicious of them. :P LOL Okay, so there is one car salesman I trust (kind of LOL). He is my uncle and is a retired car salesman. I never bought a car from him, but he did warn one of my cousins and I never to go into this business because it is so dishonest. This was after he retired. Though at the same time I don't trust him because he is known to tell tall tales. Most people believe him, he tells them so well! LOL I on the other hand know when he's telling one...usually! LOL

Oh, I can see where the salesman didn't want you around sitting there giving him the evil eye haha. What can I say about a salesman in the family, we had one for a short time. Whit

I'm sure there are some that are very honest people but the very nature of the job is that their commission depends on selling you a vehicle. They have to convince you that their car is what you want. They talk fast and push papers thru fast and do not pause long enough for you to read the fine print. I've been ripped off a couple of times and I know plenty of others who have. I think the key is to make sure that you have someone with you that knows a bit about cars and not to let yourself feel pushed or rushed into a decision. Read that fine print. They want your sale badly and they will let you take your time

I'm guilty of this myself. I've been rushed and steamrolled through a few sales. I'm sure there are honest folks selling cars out there too, but like you said, the nature of the job, any commission sales job for that matter, is to sell.

Personally I do a lot of research before I go to buy a car. I know what I want and how much I am willing to spend before I even get there. That being said it really doesn't matter whether I trust the sales man or not. If they can't give me what I want I go some where else. I have left dealerships before and I tell them that when I walk in. I really think that for the people who get "taken" its there own fault for not doing the research they should have. Buying my mother in laws car was the best car buy of my life. She left there with a better deal then she could have ever thought she was going to get, the sales man was crying literally, and I was offered a job. She traded the car in a year later, the sales man quit, and I turned down the job offer.

Oh you are hardcore when it comes to a deal I see...lol I agree that research is the key, especially now that you can get so much information over the internet. Years ago, it was a guessing game.

I had a few EX-brother-in-laws who were car salesmen (what was she thinking??) They are the lowest of the low. Hun searches out his own cars, eliminates the markup, fixes them up and sells or gives them to members of our family, just so they don't have to deal with car lots! Those people will stop at NOTHING to get a sale. I think your husband should get into NEW car sales... sounds like he has respect for the customer! Maybe expensive foreign cars!?

Like I said above, new car sales commissions weren't always that great. The time to make big money selling cars is past in a lot of cases. Just starting out if tough I guess. Sounds like he's a real good guy handling the cars for your family by the way, every family should have one!!
