My friend gets a stye inside the edge of his eyelid. He find it difficult to open his eye and always feel has something in his eye. I only know about put a warm compress on it to bring it to a head and told he wash his hands regularly.
Are there any other things he can do himself to minimize the pain and reduce the risk of spreading the infection?

I have herd they can be very painful and uncomfortable. Many years ago a physician told me never to touch your bath towel to your eyes, he said after you use a bath towel you hang it up wet in the bathroom which is damp and dark and it grows many bacterias. I don't know if this is true but I have always listened to his advice and I never ever got a stye.

A stye usually clears up by itself within a few days, and the following steps will help to minimize the pain and reduce the risk of spreading the infection.
Don't rub the eye or squeeze the stye to release pus. Put a warm compress on it to bring it to a head. Soak a cotton-wool pad or clean cloth in warm to hand-hot water, then squeeze it out and place it on the eyelid. Keep reapplying it for 10-15 minutes, rewarming the pad when it cools down. Repeat several times a day until the stye bursts.
Once the stye has burst, bathe your eyelid with warm water, then keep your eye clean and dry.
Wash his hands regularly and avoid rubbing or touching the affected eye.
Don't use eye make-up on the affected eye. I think your friend is a boy, so may he don't do that.:-)
Don't wear contact lenses while he has a stye.
Does your friend get well now? I think my tips come too late.
