Do you consider yourself a liberal or a conservative?

In general, if you had to pick one, would you say you're liberal or conservative? Whichever one you chose, why do you say that? I ask that because I'm liberal and admit it but there are times when I hear or read things attributed to liberals that doesn't apply to my view of something at all so I know it's really not as clear-cut and black and white as some would have you believe. So, what are you and why, or in what way? Or to put it another way, what do you identify most with whichever you consider yourself to be? There are no right or wrong answers here because it's really all subjective in my opinion. Annie

I would say I'm neither, I have moderate political views. I used to be more liberal but over the last couple years a lot of the more liberal policies havn't really made sense to me. In the UK though, our 3 main political parties - liberal democrats, conservatives, and labour - don't have much of a difference, they are pretty much all quite central now on the political spectrum, with socialist and personalist policies. That's why a lot of us are interested in US politics, you have a bigger extremes. However, even some of your democrat's policies arn't that liberal really.

I am a clear cut conservative. Here are my reasons for this: 1) I believe in small government. I believe the people should have the power. 2) I believe in personal responsibility. People know best what to do with their money, not the government. 3) I believe that traditional Family Values are the base of our society. 4) I believe our educational system is broken. The Dept of Education should be broken up, or vastly reformed to allow for private schools and vouchers to go to a private school if the public one is failing. 5) I believe the IRS should be abolished. 6) I believe in the Constitution. I believe that it isn't as living and breathing as some would say. Our forefathers put it in writing for a reason. 7) I believe this country is ours, and we need to seal our borders- and fast. We need a wall, we need more officers on the borders, and stronger checks at customs 8) I believe that any Federally Funded Department not specifically stated in the constitution should be abolished . 9) I don't believe the government has a place in Marriage be it between two men, two women or a man and a woman. I do personally believe that Marriage is a sacred thing between one man and one woman. 10) I believe that the environment isn't the most pressing issue. I don't believe in Global warming, I don't believe in stopping logging, I don't believe in cutting back emmissions for the hell of it. 11) I believe in the American Product. I believe in my great country. I believe we are the greatest country in the world and that no one can take that away. We have elected officials for a reason, but we don't always have to agree with them.

I would categorize myself as a liberal. I'm open minded, not saying that conservatives aren't. I'm pretty a live and let live kind of person.

Is there a category if you are a little on both sides. Because I am liberal about some things and conservative about others. I think on issues like schools, government, abortion, and things like that I take a more conservative approach. But as a writer I believe that people should be free to express themselves fully.

I guess that was my point in starting this discussion. I think most of us are a little of both in reality but sometimes I meet or chat with someone her or elsewhere who calls themselves one or the other but as I learn their views on different things I come to think they're not really what they think they are, at least in my estimation of what liberal and conservative mean. Does that make any sense? That's why I asked the question which do you consider yourself and why. From your answer I'd say I'd probably consider you a conservative. Annie

Yeah, if you don't think you sit specifically in either the liberal or conservative category, they call that having 'moderate' political views. I agree, it does seem to apply to a lot of people here. I have been surprised a number of times by the comments made that don't seem to fit some people's conservative or liberal stereotype. Particularly the more conservative ones, I won't name names, but it just goes to show you can't really label someone as just another selfish conservative or just another tree-hugging liberal, as some people do.

I would say that I'm a liberal, I have seen some good things coming from the republican side but we can be more hopeful for change with most democrats. Not sure that it matters though because a president has yet to come into the white house and actually make a difference in anything anyway.
