Global Warming - is your understanding influenced by MyLot?

February 10, 2008 2:00am CST
I've just been reading an article here www.realclimate.org that discussed the way in which climate change is reported by the media. With the over whelming scientific evidence now available the media are mostly agreed that global warming is taking place (and is man made). However, there are many discussions on MyLot that are being used to spread dis-information and mislead people. The question is, do you allow these discussions to influence you? You certainly shouldn't, the websites they often refer to are not by real scientists. The IPCC are real scientists appointed by world governments to assess climate change, they should be taken as the only authority on the subject. 99% of readers of MyLot are smart people, I would urge you all to read the realclimate website and to NOT take part in any discussions that contain misleading or false information.

I get my information basically from looking out my window. This morning it was snowing and very cold. I had to put lights on in my apartment because it was so dark. Now only hours later the sun is shining and I've opened my windows. That's quite a change. I hope everyone is watching 6 Degrees on the National Geographic channel tonight so they can all get the truth about Global Warming... http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/sixdegrees/

I checked out your link. It is about the changes that would occur on earth if the average temperature were to rise by 6 degrees. I suspect those changes are accurately protrayed. At the link it says that 6 degrees is possible. That is true, too. It is also true that it is very unlikely. In the next 100 years an increase of 1 degree is much more probable and a decrease is now known to be feasible.

When making up your mind about man made global warming, do not look at anyone's creditials, degrees, or even myLot star ratings. Look up the actual studies being talked about. They almost all are available on the internet.

Yes, you can learn a lot here. Just be carefull to make up your own mind and not be bullied by some members on the site. Just take a look at peoples rating scores to see who is the best to learn from.

I agree. I was convinced long ago that we were hastening global warming. Then I read Gore's book An Inconvenient Truth and saw the scientific evidence. We are way past the place where we can afford to ignore the statistics. We need to take it seriously and each one do what they can to turn things around.

Hi Youdontsay, Good to hear from you. yes, it's something that everyone on the planet needs to take seriously. We only have one planet, we should look after it.

Hello Sweets, Yes I do listen to mylot friends but in the end I have my own mind.. The thing is that some people choose to plug there ears and sing loudly when the are being told the scary facts..They for whatever reason can not handle the truth..They live with a "what I don't know won't hurt me" attitude...well it still will...hurt like hel1 Because we have those that shout..no no it's not true..we the people that walk through life with our ears and eyes open must do our part and theirs ...yes theirs..We that realize the danger our planet is in must do more then we have time for ..more then we have energy for..Or we can just know it will be ok..I know it and I am doing the correct things to make it a reality! I just keep speaking the enviro talk and know that the ones I touch will open their eyes..I KNOW they will listen..maybe not today but someday.. Honey we all do things in our own time.. The harder you push the harder they resist... Just in your own mind know that our planet will be healed and it will be..And the speed at which it heals will depend on the number of people believing it will. You know that people learn from watching others..Be an example and be the kind of person that others want to follow... When you 'Be and let be' ..you'll find you are being asked what should I do?..But if you are cramming it down someone's throat they are not about to swallow it! xoxoxoxoxo

Hi Raydene, Many thanks for taking part in the discussion. Yes, you are so right that many choose to bury their heads in the sand. We all have to our bit to educate them. And yes, I agree, we can make a difference and heal the planet if we all do our bit.

Global warming is something that the entire world is looking at. I think if anyone was able to prove its not happening we would know by now. I do my bit to help save the planet (it saves money as well) by recycling and I use my car less. I often read discussions on MyLot and it's quite easy to spot the ones who are spreading disinformation. I also think we should try to reduce our dependance on oil from the east, too many wars are being fought and too many people killed.

Hi Charmed_one, Yes, good point about reducing our dependance on forgien oil. There are so many other good reasons why we should reduce or CO2 emissions such as better air quality and a more efficient use of our oil resources. No one really know for sure just how much oil we have left on the planet. it's issues such as these that many people overlook.

I think discussions on My Lot is about our free opinions. Sometime our opinion for half of people is being used to spread dis information and mislead people. the other people says no, that my opinion. So It's all depend on us.

Yes, opinions are good. I like the hear the other side of an arguement so I can make an informed choice. On the subject of gobal warming I have yet to hear one signle valid arguement that counters global warming. I really do wish that global warming was not happening as the impact on every person on the whole planet could be significant. However, I do believe that we can make enough advances to avert disaster.

I went to the link you mentioned and found this article. http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2008/01/the-debate-is-just-beginning-on-the-cretaceous/#more-526 This article is a sophisticated, yet still lame, specious attempt to explain how it is that the earth was much hotter in the past than now, without any activity by modern man. You really need to read this article several times and contemplate what it says and means and why it was written before blindly accepting the notion of man made global warming. This quote is from the above article. "Could it be that the glaciation is telling us that we are completely barking up the wrong tree with the CO2 theory of hothouse climates? Perhaps, but somebody will have to pony up a quantifiable alternative before that avenue can be pursued." That quantifiable alternative, I believe, has already been ponied up! There have been published in the last 2 years studies showing the sun actually gets hotter and colder. When the sun gets hotter, the earth gets hotter. When the sun gets cooler, the earth gets cooler. In science, it is the hypothsis that is simpler and explains more that is usually right.

recent studies (by real scientists) have shown that the suns cycle can not account for the warming we are currently seeing. Yes, in science it is often the most simple hypothsis that is true. The most simple hypothsis for global warming is that it is man made.

"recent studies (by real scientists) have shown that the suns cycle can not account for the warming we are currently seeing." Name one such study! The sun heats the earth. Any variability in the sun's output necessarily changes the temperature of the earth. Anyone claiming otherwise is foolish.
10 Feb 08
For someone who claims ot be an expert you are not very well read on the subject. The studies that showed that the sun is not responsible for global warming made the news big time, how on earth could you have missed it? Here's a link the an article in the Guardian that gives a nice simple overview. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2007/jul/11/climatechange.climatechange1 Any fool who knows anything about global warming will understand that the greenhouse effect is all about how much heat is trapped by the earths atmosphere. There are two parts to the equation, you have chosen to ignore one of them. This is the whole problem, as we add to the CO2 we are trapping too much heat.

I recently found on the internet the actual study you mentioned concerning 'cosmic rays' and changes in cloud cover on the earth. I started a thread with a link to the actual study and an article about the study. I have debunked the reporting of the article concerning this study. Note, I said I debunked the 'reporting' not the study. The study is excellent, but I'm pretty well convinced the reporters are liars. You can find this thread under 'discussions I've started' in my profile. The title is: LIARS: An example

I do believe we are in a global Crisis right now. It has nothing to do with any Media coverage. Look at Temparature Changes currently taking place. Something is happening.
