Watching cooking shows make us better at it?

I have been watching cooking shows, especially Emeril and Jamie Oliver for long. In the beginning i did this cos Oliver is a funny dude, and because i am a man who adores food :). Well after some time it became obvious I was learning from them. I would ask my mom to handle cooking myself, and sometimes results were good, others not. But i kept learning. Its more obvious now, after some years. My parents get advice from me for the spices and their amounts, for barbecue solutions to have tender and tasty meat. Furthermore, I have made them stop some habits of them that caused the meat being tender but lose its taste. I am good at this it seems! What do you think? These shows are just fun, or supply ideas for everyday cooking, or can they improve our cooking qualities too? Thanks for your replies, have a nice day!

I started to watch the cooking shows for fun. Then I quit watching them because I wasn't cooking anything close to what they were doing and it started to get a little upsetting. Now after some time, I'm watching a few again, but I pick and choose which ones that would be of interest to me for cooking. I go to the internet after the shows and will print out recipes. So I guess the answer is that for awhile they weren't helping, but I got over it and now have found a way to enjoy them plus use what they're teaching me. Whit

Thing is that even if u dont manage as well as they do, you tend to grab some things or techniques they are using, thus you can say that they offer a bit to you. Thanks for your reply!

I think it is educational for someone like you who desire to improve their cooking skills. Cooking is a good area where you can make money and provide for your family.

Well i dont care about making money, all that matters for me is help my family and get the qualities, because everyone should know how to cook. When i have my own family i dont want to have my wife cook all the time :)

I agree with you we can learn a lot from cooking shows. I used to watch Emeril and Jamie Oliver all the time. I love good fresh food. Now I watch a Canadian Show (that is where I live) with Michael Smith. I have learned a lot from all the shows even though I have cooked for a long time. I now know how to segment an orange, how to caramelize an onion and how to arrange my kitchen cupboards. Michael Smith stores all his stuff in inexpensive glass jars, pasta, rice, couscous and so on. This way there are no open bags hanging around that could attract dust or insects. Also the shelves are always tidy. I wish I had more space though but with this organization I can manage. I am so glad that as a young man you take such interest in cooking. You know all the famous chefs are men.

I really usually end up watching for entertainment. I'm vegan and they rarely make healthy vegan dishes but I still enjoy watching. Jamie is funny and entertaining and so are Paula Deen and Ace of Cakes.
