United States

I have no clue why people do this, but I see this more and more where people are dressing there dogs/puppy to match them. What do you think of this? If you do it why? Does anyone know the purpose of why your would dress your pooch?

Cyn is going to laugh about this one... I have a rottweiler, he would never tolerate anything but reindeer antlers at Christmas for a picture. My other dog is a puggle and I was Paris for Halloween, and I dressed my puppy in a polo shirt and some sunglasses. I will say everyone got a good laugh and he doesn't seem to mind. I do put a sweater on him in the winter because it's below zero and he's a little skinny thing and freezes outside. Normally I don't dress him but it's tempting because of the laugh factor with me being a goof and all most of the time.

LOL... I can imagine a rottie eating a reindeer but not being one. As for a puggle what's a puggle .. know it's part pug but what else is it part of?

I think people who dress their animals aren't all there in the head. I mostly see this done to little dogs. I think the reason for this is because the owners of big dogs know they would get eaten if they tried putting their rottie in a tutu. If you get a good answer let me know. lol

Mornin', Bella! Geez, it's freezing here! yesterday, it was in the 60's and gorgeous and today it's l8 degrees! The sun is shining beautifully, but it's so freaking cold! Anyway, to your question - my b/f has a pug, who's the sweetest thing ever - her tongue hangs out of her mouth all the time and she's so cute, it hurts. Robin dresses her in a coat in the winter, and she wears bandanas when she goes in for grooming. But I make her Halloween costumes! Two years ago, I made her a black tutu, with pink ostritch feathers, a headdress and leg tutus. I did all of this by hand and it took hours upon hours of my time and I pretty much literally worked my fingers to the bone - but you should have seen her! My god, she looked so funny with that tutu - black tulle with ostrich feathers sewn it and that headdress. It was a vintage rhinestone pin shaped like a pyramid, and had a huge pink ostrich feather coming straight up out of it. This dog was amazing - she was the absolute center of attention in that dog parade that year. We have one every year here in the neighborhood where I live. Last year, I went a LOT simpler and made her a hippie flower child. Not quite as cute as the tutu, but infinitely easier. Why do I do this? Um, well, because I love her to pieces and she just looks so cute and honestly enjoys wearing stuff! She struts like a little dog model! I dunno, I think if people want to dress their dogs, it's fine, unless the dog objects of course. No harm, and lots of fun.

I'm on my way to your profile. So the new doggie's name is Frost? That's great. Very sweet. And you can call him Frosty too! And yes, I loved making those costumes for Hubble (the pug). I just love that dog so much - she's practically mine - I'm her Aunt. And she really does love wearing stuff, swear! I'm going to try to find some pictures and send them to you after you give me your address in PM. (okay, please?) Then you can scan them to your computer and post them - it'll give several good laughs.

I have a friend that dresses her dog. She claimes it because its winter and cold outside so she puts a coat on the dog when she takes it out. But she also has other clothes for the dog. It doesn't matter to me wether the dog wears clothes or not. Whatever. The dog is her "baby".

I did come across an occasion where I found there lots of pet shops with their dogs and puppies dressed up with fancy clothing. They looked very cute and lovely, sitting or lying in the well decorated pet houses. The owners of the pet shop had such good ideas to arouse the attentions and interests of the customers or puppy lovers to the shops for business. They spent quite a lot on these dresses, hats, puppy houses and various decorative items. I never had the idea of dressing a puppy up when I raised it few years ago. Anyhow I feel the puppy will become more relaxed and comfy if it is to be left in its natural state.

My husband says that two of the secretaries at his work are wild with this and they discuss their dog's outfits every day. It's a big deal when they go shopping and buy new outfits for the canines. I think every now and then would be ok, but not an everyday thing! That's too much. I've only been guilty of buying one outfit for one of our puppies a few years ago. It was a bunny outfit with ears for Easter. The puppy hated it and wouldn't leave it on. I didn't waste a lot of money, it was on sale and in the dollar bin. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered buying it. It was cute and only a buck. Maybe these people just don't have exciting lives???

LOL!! That must have been cute and funny at the same time to see the puppy trying to take it off while being a bunny. I don't know if it's that but I think if you read some fo the responses I have been shown what is practical and what is not. LOL!! I have learned alot about this.

No, its so wrong and not to mention pathetic...the poor dogs have fur and can very quickly become overheated...

I agree that some can have adverse effects because they have fur but I also see that some dogs like the chiuaua don't have fur and are tiny and can become very cold quite easily. At that point if they live in a frozen tundra like I do I can see why they would put a sweater on, but for that reason alone.

I had a dog a few years ago. When he was still a puppy and it was cold in winter. I tried to give him pet's clothes but he didn't like it at all. He always wanted to take it off. Later I realized that we shouldn't force our dog by our own will. Animal is find with its fur. It is no need to have clothes on them.

I see your point for dogs that have actual coats like my husky pup but what about those who have no fur like a chiauaua.? (sorry about the spelling)

sometimes our little doggy friends need clothes especially in cold places. Though my dogs are not used to having anything on them, I do keep some few tshirts for them incase they would need them. Dog parties or simply to show off that they have something to wear. Bigger dogs, I dont buy anything for them since they adapt very well to our weather and climate.

Thank your for response and I agree that in the cold weather a smaller dog that is not made for the cold climate might need a little extra warmth.

I dress my dog up like a 135 lb. Rottweiler....oh wait a second...he is a 135 lb Rottie. I guess if I wanted to lose a limb I could try to dress him up, but I've become rahter found of all of my appendages. People who dress up their animals should be beaten repeatedly with 4 foot length of chain that's been dipped in vinegar. And then they should be deported to Canada.

I believe that dressed animals is not correct, because is offended their dignity. for example put the shoes, straps or necklaces... it's horrible!!!! but I am favorefole to the use of the clothes in winter, to repair the dogs from the cold or the rain.

People who dress dog or other pets think animal feel cold, they care them and they are thinking on vet account, they did not know they were created with a proper skin to different temperatures. It is like if we dress clothes made by wood, pure wood, if the weather will be hot or cold our body temperature will adapt, it is a termic material. The pets are like clowns and I do not like to see. Interesting is the fact that are a niche business on pet dress, there are pret-à-porter to pets!!!

Well I don't have a dog but if I did then no way would I dress it up! It just looks weird to me and I wouldn't waste my money. Having said that my friend has a coat for her adorable dog but that is because he is tiny and she doesn't want him to get cold and because when it rains he gets under her umberella and she gets soaked so to keep herself dry she bought him a coat! xxx

See that is practical the dog gets cold or doesn't deal with the wet and the coat keeps him warm and dry .. I understand that. LOL!!

When i grew up we just had dogs and they never came into the house..not even a cat was allowed..maybe a goldfish..but no pets were allowed..and we lived on a farm..with pigs, chickens, livestock..etc.but nothing in the house..except a baby piglet when the mother would not nurse it and we had to feed them with a bottle and keep them warm by the cook stove..as sometimes the sow rejects her babies and even eat them.. but a dog was not given a coat or a sweater or a hat. but i live in the city and my wife has a four year old chinese shih tzu male..named reggie and sometimes he wears a protective coat or a t-shirt when his hair is cut short..but now its winter and his hair is grown out and he does not need this protection...i agree..it looks different to see a dog in drag..lol..but if the dog don't mind..??

I am very against dressing an animal. They have fur, they dont need clothes. However; my wife loves to dress our dog. She puts the dog in the kids clothes and then laughs and says how cute it is. I will take it off and then when I'm not looking there are clothes back on her again. I see it as mean. lol. She says she does it because it's cute. I don't see the cute in it.

I used to dress my dog in clothes. The main reason is because she doesn't have a lot of fur, it stays short all the time. So in the winter she shivers. But now she isn't letting me put any clothes on her anymore. So no more clothes for my dog.

I don't like it at all, the poor dog always looks so miserable and there is absolutely no need to dress them up ffs. I wish people would remember that dogs are not people and shouldn't be treated as such.

thank you for your view on the subject I do appreciate you joining in on the conversation. Do you think there is any way that it would be ok for a dog to have an article of clothing ..For ex if it was to keep a dog with no fur warm in the winter an not an every day occurance only when it's cold and snows? What about the bootie that are made for sled dogs so they have traction and don't damage their pads while they are out running a sled race or just sledding? Thank you for your response I hope to hear more from you!

Exactly. I can see if it's practicallity that is making you dress the pup or the dog ..
12 Feb 08
It was only after reading comments on this discussion, that I thought ok maybe if the dog is one from a hot country, or as you say sled dogs but I would rather the clothing was completely practical and the dog wasn't being used as a fashion accesory.
