If you want to know the Future of Computers, go and buy PC Worlds March 2008 issue. There's an article titled, The Next 25 Years by Dan Tynan. Here's an example; Computers using nanotechnology will debut in about five years,Tougaw reports. Five to ten after that, silicon will reach a point at which quantum mechanics won't allow chip pathways to get any smaller, so electric-current-based PCs will give way to optical computers that transmit streams of light....

Nanotech has been in the wings for ages, I don't know that five years will bring useable nanotech or not, but perhaps. I wouldn't be the lest bit surprised to see optical chips coming soon, but the real push will be for memory storage. The platter system has been used so long, eventually it will hit its limit too and a new system will have to be devised. Perhaps Solid State Drives will be the way things go, it certainly looks that way with all the usb drives out there and the AirBook's new solid state drive option.
