What Is Celebrity?

I was flipping through a magazine and there was a feature on celebrity perfumes. The number of "celebs" shilling their scent is becoming ridiculous. It seems that fame these days is all about turning yourself into a brand. You get the media attention and then actually do something i.e. produce a dubious record or fragrance, later.
What exactly is Paris Hilton famous for? She's a trashy millionaire and that's all she is! Long ago, the celebrities of the day were scientists. Since Paris Hilton has not found the cure for cancer (unless I have a big surprise coming to me), how does she maintain her status as a household name? It just seems really wrong to me.
Slightly off-topic: The fact that Cliff Richard has a fragrance now is beyond hilarious.

Yes I have to agree that just about anybody can get their name on a fragrance. It kind of takes the magic out of it, doesn't it? I wonder how the sales for Britney Spears' perfume are doing now....

Thank you for responding! I was starting to worry that no one would!
Very true about Britney's sales, it really would be interesting to see some figures on that.
It's also ironic that Paris Hilton's fragrance is called "Heiress". I wonder if she's considering a change now that she's been disinherited...

LOL- that's a good point. Maybe she shouldcall it "Why". As in "why the heck am I famous?"
