Squirrels! Friend or Foe?

I know the title may sound kind of silly and I know there might actually be people that have never had to deal with them, but squirrels have become a foe for me. I was trying to plant flowers in various parts of my yard and I received a bunch of flowers as a birthday present from my mother-in-law. My son helped to plant them around the backyard. Everything seemed fine with those, so I decided to plant some in the front yard. I had one of those Roll Out Flower things and some sunflower seeds. We laid out and watered the Roll Out flower things. The squirrels came along and dug up all of the seeds that were in the Roll Out Flower thing. So, I figured that I would not take the risk with the sunflowers. I started the sunflowers in the house with a grow/heat lamp from my pet gecko. They grew quite quickly and were about 4" high. I took them out and planted them. The next day, the sunflowers were completely missing. Roots and all... I can't plant anything without the rats with furry tails eating it. I so hate squirrels! :(

You can make a concoction from hot pepper sauce, vinegar, and maybe lemon juice to spray on your seedlings or on the dirt covering the seeds. Or just use hot sauce. The squirrels hate this and will go away fast when they encounter it. It won't hurt them, but it will sure make them run!

I am so going to try that nova! If this works, I can start growing my garden and not have to worry about the pests. The other option was to let my son hunt them, but I can't really see killing an animal although the thought has crossed my mind with the squirrels. Thanks for the information nova!

When I'm driving, I always slow down when a squirrel darts into the road. Would you like me to start speeding up? Just kidding! I sympathize with you. I mean, they are cute creatures, but very destructive. They got into my parent's attic, and chewed a hole through their roof. My parents put mothballs in panty hose and placed them in the attic and the squirrels went away. I don't suppose you could flank your flowers with panty hose covered moth balls...

Yes please, speed up! LoL I could flank my flowers with panty hose covered moth balls, but considering it's my front yard and pretty close to the road at that, I might get some very strange looks as people drive by. Not that I would really care, but I don't know that I could even stand to go over there and water them with the smell. What happens to moth balls when they get wet? Anyone?
