Well it has been very, very cold out here in Minnesota as of late. I had a lot of snowdrifts that reached depths of 2 feet from very high winds last weekend. Well it was way too cold (-18F) to go out and shovel the drive clear so I waited. We have a storm coming Wed night so I had to clear these huge drifts. We should get anywhere from 3 to 6 inches where I am. I live 15 miles or so north of Minneapolis. Well when it gets as cold as it has here snow left on the drive gets frozen solid. So this photo is the results of the frigid temps on the snow drifts. Kind of looks like glaciers in a way doesn't it? So do you clear your driveway/sidewalk etc right away even if its way below zero or do you wait till it warms up? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Wow!!! Great pic again! It looks as though you could build an igloo out in your yard with those chunks. lol. Being in the south of England, we rarely have that much snow, if at all, so there's no problem of clearing drives, but if we did have warning of a snowstorm, I would probably salt the pathway and driveway before it arrived, so that the majority of it thawed as it fell, and made the job easier. I definitely wouldn't go out there if it was that cold, but probably immediately the snow stopped, so that it was softer and easier to clear. Brightest Blessings.

Yard Glaciers - The one side of my driveway full of snow chunks
Here's a shot of the one side of the drive with the glaciers in the yard. HAHAHA!! Salt ruins the driveways over time though. Plus I have my Buster (Beagle) and the salt is not good for his paws so I have to be careful on salt useage. I use very little all winter. The only time I di salt is if it is icy etc or a slweet storm etc. When it snowed at first I was in and out in -35 windchills clearing it with the snowblower but when the winds got faster and the snow drifted really deep I gave up till recently. Thanks. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Ah, I can understand you not using salt too often then, and also that is way toooooooooo cold to be out in. The pic explains all, my friend. You sure are battling against the elements there.

LOL does look like glaciers, great photo bob. I've been lucky since moving this past year and have only had to shovel a few time (just in front of the doors). My 'landlord' has a plow and my 16 year old son loves driving it so he's been doing a great job of keeping the drive cleared - sometimes plowing 3-4 times in 24 hours. When we've had the extremely cold temps though he's only done it 'as needed' to be able to get in and out.

Glaciers Buried Now - Well now they have been buried under
5 new inches of this beautiful white stuff.
We had a storm overnight. So this is what that same area looks like now. HAHAHA!! I don't need a plow but would love one on a truck to make some extra cash during this type of weather. But then I wouldn't want to do my own in that case. HAHAHA! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

My Driveway - Long for a city house
I'd have to have at least a riding lawnmower with a plow attatchment for that driveway. Here's a shot on my drive. About one fourth your size but large for the city actually. I seldom do it by hand. Usually a snowblower as I can't handle being in the cold too long with my bronchial asthma. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Snow - shows how long a driveway we have to shovel
I've known a lot of people who have plows on trucks but the last 10 or so years we really haven't had enough snow at one time to make it worth the expense. We have a 'Gator' with an attachable snow blade. It takes several trips up and down the drive but it sure is better than doing it by hand. This photo gives an idea of how long our drive is - I wasn't even at the road when I took this shot. Obviously this was before Shane plowed :)

Snow is falling - Taken out my back door. Snowing lightly at the time this was shot.
It's just past midnight here in Minnesota and we have a nice snowstorm happening right now. I love it. Finally getting some snow. Up to 6 inches which is good for me. I want more but I'll take the measley 6 inches at this time. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I've got a nice snowastorm happening at the time I am typing this. Wooo Hooooo! Finally getting the snow I wanted for so long. Most storms this winter have taken a southern turn missing us which is odd. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We had a 'mini' storm yeaterday and Bruce went a did some shoveling every hour or so. It was so it did not build up. He used a whole bunch of salt to keep the build up down. Salt probably doesn't work that well up there because it is so cold, right?

I hate letting the snow build up even though I have a snowblower. I just like a clear looking driveway etc. Salt works but over time it eats away at the cement and blacktop so I use it sparingly. Besides it's not good on my Busters paws. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Fantastic picture AGB! Well as we have only had one snowfall that lay for anytime this year so I can't say we have experienced much snow clearing! The one time when it was snowing my neighbour came and cleared all the snow from our path and steps when the snow stopped! Only problem was it started again as soon as he finished! xxx

My old neighbor that moved recently was a nice young couple. They both worked and their kids were all elementary school students. When it snowed I'd snowblow their drive and walks for them all the time. they would bake me goodies. The girls and the mom did this. They were great. I sure miss them. Since I have a gravel drive, I only clear my drive when we get over 8" of snow. I give my neighbor a few bucks to clear it with his tractor. Otherwise, depends on how wet the snow is on if I shovel a path to the shed or not. We just got 4" yesterday and it's supposed to snow tomorrow as well. So far, drive is still snow packed.
