there are many types of video files out there. if you are having a difficult time or you can't play a movie file at all, you can try installing a media player that can almost play any video file out there. Try installing K-lite codec pack. after installing this, i'm pretty confident that you can play the movie file that you can't play before you installed K-lite codec pack.

The only media player out there that I know of that can play almost any video WITHOUT needing to install a codec pack is VLC player... And you don't even have to install what K-lite codec pack like you said...

i second the vote for VLC player. i've also started using a player called Miro which seems be able to play just about any video. i've found these are much easier to use as is rather than having to install codecs.
