Which brand of laptop is truly value for money?

Looking to get a new laptop, since I have to return this one to my friend soon (had it on long-term loan hehehe). Since I'm more experienced with desktop sets then laptops, I have no idea which brand is truly value for money in this area.
I'm a heavy user (designer/programmer) so I'll need something that is really powerful. Fashion is secondary (hey, I can always get cool skins!) Recommendations everyone?

If you are designer, probably Apple Mac is the best for you.
The only problem is that Apple is very expensive.
I use sony vaio and I am very happy....

Where i live, the most popular brand for power is DELL and the most popular for preformance is dell or fujitsu siemans, i have a desktop DELL and a laptop Fujitsu Siemans, and i am very happy with the preformance of both.
I dont know if they are around where you live or not!?!?
