How do you cut the black nails?

I usually cut my dogs nails myself. The problem is, I never cut the black nails short enough. I'm terrified that I will cut that vein that is in them. Is there a better way to see the vein in the black nails in order to avoid cutting it while still cutting the nail short enough?

Where the nail is curved and starts getting thick is where the vein starts. For our cat with black nails, I use that as a guide.
