There are certain facets that if done correctly, make my reading a fiction novel enjoyable. Strong characters are always my favorite, but I like them not being smug. I like the stories to contain an air of mystery, and pockets of thrilling action.
Also I love reading stories filled with sarcastic dark humor.
Plus I become engrossed, if the novel contains sci-fi material, but the type that is plenty close to reality.
Mainly I prefer despondant tales, rather than ones with sunny dispositions.
What kind of fiction novels do you enjoy, and what factors in them?

Im with ya, I also enjoy it when the author takes a different unique rout, rather than the typical mundane journey.
Nothing beats originality and creativity.

I love sci-fi/fantasy/horror especially stories with twists. I like fast reads - where they don't take time to describe the whole surroundings or get in-depth with the characters. Victor Hugo had a habit of this, and I'll admit I skipped whole chapters in his books.
Actions and reactions can tell you what the characters are like, without having to describe every detail about them or their history.
I like Stephen King novels, Dean Koontz, Eragon, and Harry Potter. That kind of gives you an idea of what I like to read. I don't read much anymore, but will read what the kids bring home from the school library now and then. I still like Roald Dahl.
My all time favorite book is My Side of the Mountain. The only book that I've started but never finished reading is The Silmarilian (Silmarilion?) by Tolkien.
So basically I like books like I like movies; action packed, dramatic, and with a good plot twist. -Tink

It is the story that gets me to read fiction. I usually read non fiction so it has to be a really good story to get me to read fiction.I like character driven stories.
