My Insurance Will Cover My Surgery

I have been waiting for the right time to talk about this. But I guess now is as good a time as any. I mentioned this a while ago, but I never believed that my insurance would be willing to pay for it. I started seeing a new doctor and he kept bugging me about it, so I called the insurance company and they said that if it is needed they will cover it. Now I am waiting for a doctor who is willing to do the Bariatric Procedure. I am aware of most of the risks and I am not afriad. They will run a lot of test and make sure that I am in good enough shape for the surgery. The only thing that concerns me is that people have told me that doctors discriminate against those with mental illness. I am believing for a miracle and that this will not be the case with me.

If you find the right doctor, they won't discriminate against mental illness. I say this because my husband and I both are on disability because of mental illness. Back in August my husband had stomach surgery (where they wrap the stomach around the esophagus). He had major complications with it (clusters of blood clots in both lungs, pneumonia, and a partial collapsed lung and he was only 24). That is rare though. He didn't have the problem with discrimination because of mental illness though, so just find the right doctor. I hope you have success in finding that doctor.

I am so sorry to read this. Is your husband okay now? I hope that everything turned out alright for him. I believe that this is a God thing, so I know that he will be with me every step of the way. Thank you for your response.

He has been on Coumadin (blood thinner) since he went in the hospital with the blood clots. I also believe it's a God thing. That is the only way we made it through was by the grace of God and prayer. We have had a lot of trouble getting his Coumadin levels straight. He bruises to easily and has nose bleeds, but he's here and that's what's most important.

Rozie I do not understand what you mean in your last sentence "I am believing for a miracle and that this will not be the case with me." Do you think the doctors will not do surgery on you because you have a mental illness? I can tell you a lot of people that I know have had surgery and are mentally ill. I do not know what it is you have but I know you will probably have to be signed off my a psychologist. I wish you luck girlfriend.

I am having Bariatric (weight loss) Surgery. The people who work in the board and care where I live have told me that there were others who tried to get the surgery and were turned down because of their mental illness. Maybe they failed a psychological test or something, I do not know. But I have faith that this will not happen to me and that the surgery will be successful.

I had to go and look up Bariatric surgery as this is the first time I have ever heard of it. I have heard of gastric bypass and gastric banding which is similar to that surgery if I understand it correctly. Its very major and something I am sure you have had a lot of time to think about, research about along with talking with your doctor about the benefits, risks involved, as well as what this surgery would do you to you in the long term i.e. life changing. I am glad that you are not afraid. It must of been a very hard decision to make. You won't be alone through this my friend. WE will be here for you every step of the way. Please keep us updated as I want to know what's going on ok, if you're ok to share it with us.

Good luck with your procedure. A few of my friends have had bariatric procedures, and they have been very happy with the results. Are you considering the Lap bad, or the gastric bypass? Most of the people i know went for the gastric, but I have been hearing a lot about the banding lately. Good luck.

I am really leaning toward the Lap Band. I want to have children some day and the Gastric Bypass just takes so much out of you, literally.

I'm also in the "mental illness" community and think because it's considered a cosmetic surgery that doctors will give you a bad time about doing it. Personally I've never had to have any surgery so I never had this problem to deal with. Most of the doctors I have had dealings with have been within the mental health system and have never discriminated against me in any way. Whatever happens I wish you all the luck in the world.

My insurance has agreed to pay for the surgery because it is needed. I do not believe in cosmetic surgery. This is something that is necessary to keep me alive.

I am so happy for you if this is something you want. Make sure you let us all know before the surgery so we can include you in our prayers. I know that things will turn out just fine for you. You will know when you meet the doctor if he or she is the one to do the surgery. They won't be able to hide their feelings, you will pick up on something. I don't think you will have anything to worry about. I think you are a very nice caring person.

Hi there Rozie37! First of all, I am happy for you that your insurance company will shoulder the surgery expenses. That's one big burden off your shoulders. Second, I really don't know anything about Bariatric Procedure but I do hope that the whole surgery will be safe and easy, and may it produce a very positive outcome. Good luck and I'll be keeping you in my thoughts even though we really don't know each other. I will be waiting for your post on how the surgery went well.
