Well it looks like our government has done it again. When Katrina hit more than two years ago, the government agency, known as FEMA[The Federal Emergency Management Agency) set up temporary mobile homes for displaced persons hit and affected by the Katrina victims until they could find permanent homes.
Now it's disclosed that all these mobile units are toxic and creating severe health problems for those living in them. More than 38,000 people are living in these homes. Here's the article:
(quote)
..."More than two years after residents of FEMA trailers deployed along the Mississippi Gulf Coast began complaining of breathing difficulties, nosebleeds and persistent headaches, U.S. health officials announced Thursday that long-awaited government tests found potentially hazardous levels of toxic formaldehyde gas in both travel trailers and mobile homes provided by the agency.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, which requested the testing by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said it would work aggressively to relocate all residents of the temporary housing as soon as possible.
Levels of formaldehyde gas in 519 trailer and mobile homes tested by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Louisiana and Mississippi were — on average — about five times what people are exposed to in most modern homes, the CDC reported. In some trailers, the levels were nearly 40 times customary exposure levels, raising fears that residents could suffer respiratory problems and potentially other long-term health effects, it said.
At a news conference Thursday in New Orleans, CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding urged the Federal Emergency Management Agency to relocate residents before summer, when heat would be expected to cause the formaldehyde levels to increase, with priority given to families with children, elderly people or anyone with asthma or other chronic conditions.
FEMA Director David Paulison, who also spoke at the news conference, said he believed his agency could meet that goal despite a shortage of affordable housing plaguing areas of the Gulf Coast afflicted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005....."

So what kind of a-holes run FEMA anyway? Those mobile homes cost money, and no doubt paid for through taxpayer's money...and this is what those people got???? Toxic homes? What kind of stupidity is this anyway? Many of those people no doubt have no proper health care insurance...so now who is going to foot the bill for health related issues due to them being exposed to toxic substances due to these homes???

Hi Pye... I've got a story to tell you. I had actually forgotten about it till hubby reminded me of it. We were shopping around and having some fun around town and decided to stop at one of these RV places to see the inside of these fancy things just to get a thrill so to speak. Well one of them, I couldn't figure out what it was but it instantly made me sick and I couldn't breathe!! I had to hurry hubby out of my way so I could get outside and once I was out I was able to breathe normal again. We had no idea what happened but I wouldn't dare go into another one after that. Strange how years later we hear about these trailers with FEMA having this toxic fumes! It may be exactly what we ran into although hubby wasn't affected by it nearly as much as I was. He thinks it's because they're closed up too much too long and that's why the toxins have gone up so high and probably or most likely what happened to us. Weird, huh? It was pretty scary at the time.

No it wasn't gov't issued but a sales place in Killeen Texas. I won't go into another one unless it's been aired out for a few hours. That one time was enough of a scare for me. It has a certain smell and it overides the newness kind of smell. Kind of a closed up tight kind of smell but not a stinky smell but a not so right kind of smell. Hard to describe but one I'll never forget!

Makes you wonder about the safety of any of the newer mobile homes, right?

My guess is somebody knew somebody that had to get rid of a bunch of defective mobile homes and that somebody got to somebody else and they found their way to the Katrina site while the somebodies are living like fat cats a long ways away.

uh, huh, sounds like it...the govt wanted to get really cheap homes from some "dealer" and didn't care about the health risks the homes had...

It said some thing about the wood treated with formalgahyde for what reason I dont know that sounds very stupid to me I know the stink when they are new but to treat the wood with this dont make since I wish I knew some one now that works at Clayton homes to see if they treat their wood like this too. .
WOuld be good to know .
Of cource the tax payers will be the ones to foot the bill AGAIN!

FEMA doesn't really care about people, just like nearly every other branch of the government doesn't anymore. I'm sure a few people do, but most of them are only looking out for themselves.
They didn't have people check the trailers for formaldahyde levels because it would've cost them more money. That's the statement that was given last summer, when this issue arose.
It is ridiculous. Many people have fallen ill -- and this kind of mess after people lost their homes and haven't been able to get back on their feet again.

It is such a shame that these people just don't seem to be getting a break. I am guessing that the the government will be footing these bills, and maybe some lawsuits, as people are sue crazy.

What's really a shame is that FEMA and other federal officials were told about the problems soon after people starting moving into the trailers, more than two years ago. The Feds ignored the people who said they were having respiratory problems, etc.... but at the same time were telling their own employees not to live in the trailers because they were unhealthy!
While it's easy to blame FEMA, the Administration deserves the real blame... they botched the Katrina affair from the time the hurricane hit and are still doing a bad job years later. The public has to demand accountability from Pres. Bush and force him to put people in charge who will meet benchmarks for making progress.

I think FEMA does a horrible job,NOBODY should have to live in these trailors anymore. It's been so long since hurricane Katrina that everybody should have a decent home by now. I think it's sad that the government is never there for people in need. It's always private companies or people like you and me that lend a helping hand.
Makes you wonder what our taxes really get used for.
I have no faith in FEMA or even any charitable organizations like the Red Cross or United Way.
from personal experience I know they are not all they are made out to be.
For example,we got flooded out last year in April. e got lucky since we lived on the second floor, so we had no water damage, but we had to evacuate anyways.
Other people were not so lucky. When the Red Cross finally showed up, 2 days later,my neighbor said I should go to them to ask if they could help us find a temporary place, since we been staying with my brother in law since the evacuation.
The first thing out of their mouth was, if I lost any possessions, I said no but I am not allowed to stay in my home. I got brushed off and got an attitude,as if my dilemma wasn't bad enough for them to deal with me.
Then my neighbor cut his finger when he was trying to clear out his appartment and tried to salvage what he could. He asked them for a band aid and guess what? They didn't even have a band aid in their van and no first aid kit!! The Red Cross doesn't even have band aids?? WTF?
I ran into our car and got our first aid kit out and bandaged him up.
Then they were taking down my neighbors info and dug through a box and handed them some toothpaste and soap. The guy doesn't have a place to take a shower or brush his teeth, so I think those items were the least of their worries.
We never did see anybody from FEMA btw and our area was declared a disaster area.

i WANT to say that i am shocked and appalled. i am apalled of course, but after everything thats happened from Katrina on...im not really that shocked, which is a sad thing to say.
as if those poor ppl werent in a bad enough situtation, they have to deal with sickness and potential long-term illness from the HELP FEMA was supposed to be giving them.
of course the government should pay for their medical care that are a result of those trailers..but in the end it will be us the taxpayers of course. heaven forbid we stop giving millions and millions to other countries and help the ppl here at home!
as for the formyldayde...i remember hearing that its used in the treatment of carpet..and being told that after having new carpet installed to let it air out and keep the room ventilated for a couple of days...not sure if that is still used on carpet or not. but i dont recall hearing anybody say that it would actually make you sick..give a headache sure, but not any long term affect!
man, it sure seems like the victims of Katrina are getting screwed at every corner!

I am in Mississippi right now. I have known about this for quite awhile. Right now people are transitioning to "FEMA cottages" They just put one in behind my parent's property. I am not sure about how to get them or any of that. I just know that they are popping up all over the place.
This one is a bright pink/peach color. My mom and dad are looking into fast growing trees so they don't have to look at it every day. Could be worse though, I saw one in New Orleans that was Barney purple.
FEMA is not perfect. I was in Hurricane Katrina personally. People are always complaining about something. First it was that they didn't respond quick enough, now it is that they didn't take the time to research the housing that they were put in. Which do you want, fast and not perfect or well thought out and time consuming?
I got a check from FEMA that no where near covered everything I lost, but I am not complaining. I don't know... I am just sick of the FEMA bashing day in and day out.
Did you know that they put hurricane victims on a luxury cruise ship in Alabama after Katrina? The victims completely TRASHED the ship. The whole thing had to be gutted and re-done. Crime was out of control, the cops were called every day because of it. No matter what people are given it is never enough.
A lot of people lost EVERYTHING, but believe it or not there are people who are living much BETTER OFF than they were before the hurricane.
Anyway, it usually strikes a nerve when the hurricane talk and complainig starts up. I am posting a picture of the new FEMA trailers.
