Is there a trick to pedometers?

I have purchased a couple of pedometers over the years and also gotten a couple for free. They seem like a really neat concept. Something to keep you walking, you know. You set a goal for so many steps and you keep going until you reach your goal. Here's the problem. I may be dumb, but I can never get the things to work properly. It can't be that hard, I mean they gave them away for free at McDonalds for gods sake. Has anyone else ran into this problem or am I just daft?

I have found that some of the less expensive pedometers just don't function correctly. I finally bought one online that was recommended by several people and I have really enjoyed it and it has worked perfectly. Mine is made by Omron. When I received it, it had wonderful instructions for programming it to my stride length, height, and weight. With a simple push of the 'mode' button it will tell me how many steps I have taken, how many of those stesp were areobic in nature, how are in miles or kilometers I have walked, and lastly how many calories have burned! It came with a wonderful holder that will clip onto my waistband, pocket, edge of purse or anywhere! It works in virtually any position, even keeping track of my steps if it is in my purse!
