Did Jesus Christ have long hair?

At this point, I believe he did not. It is a Christian teaching that men should not have long hair. The proof is in the Bible? It is in 1 Corinthians 11:14.

Jesus - Historians differ in their views.
The Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus who lived around 34 A.D., tells us differently: “Both his nature and his form were human: for he was a man of simple appearance, mature age, short growth, three cubits tall[a _little over 4 feet], with scanty hair, but having a line in the middle of the head after the fashion of the Naziraeans, eyebrows meeting above the nose so that the spectators could take fright, with a long face, a long nose, and with an undeveloped beard, dark skin, and hunchbacked.” It occurred to a team of British scientists that it was a little unlikely for a white Aryan Messiah to be wandering around in Palestine. They worked with a team of Israeli archaeologists and came up with this image.

I suspect Flavius Josephus, who got a lot of things right and a few things wrong in his histories, was probably a bit off the track in this one. A little over four feet? Come on. Spectators taking fright? Please. I think this was Josephus having an imagination day. As for it 'occurring to a team of British scientists that it was unlikely for a white Aryan Messiah etc' - think about it. People have known since Jesus was alive that he was Jewish, not Aryan and white. I don't think it took any great effort or brainpower on the part of these scientists to come up with this conclusion. But then, scientists have been known to be notoriously dense when it comes to commonsense! LOL

which is just one more thing that is a contradiction then....If men werent suppose to have long hair but Jesus did it anyway then he's just as rebelious as anyone else..... Personally I think its (men not having long hair) funny and jsut silly really....but I find much thats in the bible rather amusing in all honesty...More than that though I find the simple fact that ppl still try to enforce some of the demands in the bible that are just straight up LONG SINCE outdated extremely comical....

Thanks for your post. Actually Dude, it's not an outdated book. Some of the events in revelation are going to take place in the future but all written before hand to serve as our guide. And some philosophies in life that makes sense and the answers to difficult questions are there if we just take time reading it. As for Jesus' hair, the reason why I believe he did not have long hair is because he commanded Apostle Paul to preach that to men (and also women who were listening at that time). Christ cannot teach (thru Paul) a part of doctrine that he will violate himself.

hi! ...I think I am inclined to think Paul's saying men should not have long hair was a culture thing and not a law of God thing.. as Paul also wrote that writings of the law (rules) were nailed to the cross as far as our own behavior affecting our acceptance with God.. since the only source of goodness is God, being able to draw near to Him is the one thing that saves and transforms.. - I guess I envision Jesus with longish hair.. just because the cutting instrument of those days wouldn't be all that great, and so I see a sort of natural non-style.. which to me seems the way he would be concerning it.. :)

I appreciate your focusing on the topic and for being nice and conversational as well. Actually, Paul is talking about culture but it is the culture of Christianity. We have to remember that Christians have a culture to live by sanctioned by God. Their culture is apart from the ways of the world. It is a culture that the world may often despise but after all, it is in accordance with the law of Christ. And as regards to what is nailed with Christ on the Cross, it is the sins of the world that was nailed with Christ and not the laws of Christ which he reiterated to be followed, all of them right before he ascended to heaven from Mt. Olives right before the disciples' eyes. Matthew 28:19-20 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe ALL that I have commanded; and lo, I am always with you, to the close of the age. Thanks for posting.

I think you're doing what a lot of Bible readers do - making an enormous case out of one verse. Take the Bible as a whole; never take one verse and make your whole theology out of it. Otherwise you just switch people off.

I appreciate your correction. But this is not the point I was driving at. It is important to note that God put all his commandments in writing. Now, if we don't pay attention to any single one of them because we keep in mind that Bible is such a bulky reading material with many other verses, we defeat the purpose of following God's will. God says in 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scriptureis God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, Obviously, the issue on the men's hair style is not the whole theology,it's just a small part of it that needs to be followed. Christ has put so many laws in the Bible and the 10 commandments is not everything. If we keep on having excuses to delay compliance to the laws or will just select those laws comfortable for us, I guess it's time to think about it.

Sorry, Clow, but I know for a fact (I've been a Christian a long time) that if you get hung up on a small issue like length of hair, then you're going to get sidetracked from real issues, like love, justice, mercy and the like. If we follow your line of thinking then we need to start obeying all the OT laws in Leviticus as well, and I'd be surprised if you're doing that. Equally, do you require that all women wear coverings on their heads? Good luck to you, if you do! Again, don't confuse the woods for the trees; it's brought many a Christian down into a mire that sucks all the Jesus-life out of them, and turns them into a one-note religious person.

If you look at what you posted, obviously, it also does not answer the question raised. But if you have been reading and understanding my explanations to the others who posted, maybe you will have a little idea why Jesus' hair length matters to me and to the other Christians who read the Bible. If you have read my past answers already, try to read them again. Thanks for posting. That's helping me earn.

what are you talking about? what has long hair to do with christianity? christianity is all about salvation and personal relationship with jesus christ not hair.

I knew anyone would say that. And I guess, this is not comfortable thing to read or hear especially for the guys who have long hair. And you're right, Christianity is not all about hair, it's also about clothes, way of living, what you believe, what you eat, etc. short, christianity is a way of life and being able to sustain it and hair is just one small portion of it. By being able to follow the will of God, then you're a Christian. Granting we both agree that men should not sport long hair, it is also not conclusive that all men who wear short hair are Christians or concerned about salvation. Just a discussion, Dude.

what difference does it make .he livedtwo thousand years ago we may live maximum for 90 years, but the system tht controls will continuesly make up stories to believe watever bull they want to give us for ages. Promising the return of JESUS.Who will relinquish power and position collected in name of JESUS and give it back to him ?after all the pope is also a human being.for him. and every claim whetever for miracles or sainthood has to be verified taking several decades.Jesus will not last the verification process.

I don't know if He did or not. I don't care about that. That is not important. What IS important is Who He is. He is the Son of the living and true God and came to this world to save it from sin. He loves all of us so very much and we all need to receive Him as Lord and Savior. God bless!:)

Thanks for posting. It is true that the outward looks of Christ is not important for us to note. Anyway, God did not will us to know the details. Little had been written by the various authors about that. What I am more concerned about here and I believe many Christians would agree, is that, our manner of hairstyle just like dressing up is something that is elective and some people if left without any guidelines, may wear anything that is not acceptable same with hairstyle. It is clearly said in 1 Cor 11:14 that it is shameful for a man to sport long hair. And if anyone really wants to be a Christian, we are supposed to compel to what is rightful in the eyes of our Savior and the Father. Including that thing (which we may think minor). And what we are talking about is what may be prescribed to Christians. And being the source of the commandment, he is also supposed to practice what he preaches (thru his apostle Paul)and since Christ reiterated before his ascension: that the disciples should be made to follow ALL commandments. If maintaining a short hair for man is part of the commandment, then it is just logical to follow that. The only thing that makes it appear obscure right now is because humans came up with so much reasoning based on what is comfortable for them. So we don't have issues with how he looked like but whether his hair was short or long; whether he approves of long hair or not and what is really said about sporting long hair in that particular verse in the Bible 1 Cor 11:14 that is addressed not to Samson or any other God's men who were under Nazarite's vow but to the first century Christians all the way up to Christians of the modern times. I hope you got my point, Sis.

I believe Jesus had long hair. It was the tradition of men that time to have long hair. The Corinthian text that seem to prohibit long hair is a text that addresses the local situation. It is not to be used as a universal moral teaching.

In Corinthians, it is not Jesus who is speaking. If you think Christianity is about clothes, hair lengths and other such drivel, then you have missed the boat, dude! Christ himself said he was simple and his burden was light...you would muddle this up by adding all your little peccadilloes and nonsense. It's just a conversation? Don't you have better things to converse about other than turning people off to Christianity?

Yes, it was Paul speaking but where did he get the commandment from? Elsewhere? If he got it elsewhere, what's the point of the Bible supporting him as a legitimate apostle of Christan in so many verses of it? We should understand that no single apostle in Christ has the audacity to teach any Christian doctrine on their own. They are commanded by God thru Christ each time. Now, regarding the discussion, this is my discussion. This is what I want to talk about. I don't force anybody to post here. By the way, this is better recommended to those who are willing to obey God and those who don't mind getting burdened by doing so. It's true that Christ said "my burden is light". Again, Christians who don't mind obeying God's commandment will understand that and they don't get turned off by Christianity.

thats why our god sucrifice jesus for us. you know why? is because he love us so much he wanted us to have our freewill back for our lives here at our world. thats why i will conclude in this discussion... your free to post here what you want to say... your free what you think is right... you have freedom to have hair length that you like, lol... you have freedom for your self thats good for your soul... and the freedom to search for the truth... and the freedom to argue with the others who respond to this discussions.

I think he had long hair, beard and mustache also. He is a spiritual master. It's common in spiritual practice, that spiritual masters or spiritual teachers let their hair grow longer. Cutting hair shortly and neatly is considered as caring about physical appearance. Spiritualist should not do that.

Thanks for your post. I'm happy you posted a positive comment. Actually as stated by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:14, it's a shame unto a man to wear long hair. So, why would, any man who wishes to please God, wear long hair? That's a simple logic they don't get. Anyway, the Bible states more people in our time will believe lies than the truth. I'm so happy that someone agrees with me. It is expected. Truly the Bible says the truth. Most people believe their own made up philosophies or anything that will not contradict their ways, it's like they believe something that is comfortable for them to believe and hold on to. They don't want to research anymore and become stagnant. They even doubt the Bible.

in hebrews 2: 13+14 it states to judge yourselfs whether a man should have hair or not, and a woman should have hair or not. and to me personally i wouldnt care right know if jesus has long hair because if we are suppose to follow christ and bring in his people, should it matter if he has hair.
