What would happen if the moon were destroyed?

Over the summer, we watched a silly little television show called "Three Moons Over Milford" where the moon was struck by a meteor or something and broke into 3 pieces. People started behaving differently because they thought the world was coming to an end. What do you think about this? Could we survive without a moon?
