How Old Did You Say You Were?

Aging unfortunately is a natural progression in life, but I like many others, I am sure, find it a progression thats hard to accept. For example, today I have the interview that I mentioned in a previous discussion and one of my concerns is my age. The position is in a retail environment and most people behind a counter are young. Have you had a hard time accepting the aging process? Do you readily admit your age? Have you ever been turned down for something because of your age?+

I find aging extremely difficult. I have always been one who looks younger than they are and because of this, when I was younger I hated it. I always wanted to look and be older. I couldn't wait to say I was an adult. What the hell was I thinking? I am now 29 years old and I don't know where all the years have gone. It seems that once I turned 21, the years have just flown by. Day dreaming was soon replaced by reality, bills and anxiety disorders. Life set in and I never really had a chance to enjoy my young adult years because I was too busy rushing to be an adult. I am happily married now and I love my husband with all my heart. Life is actually not that bad for me. However, I will be 30 on Ocotber 5th and I am finding it really hard to accept. To me turning 30 means the start of old age. I know some would consider it young but when it's you who is turning it, I assure you, it's another thing entirely.... I know that on the day I turn thirty, there will be much reflection on the past and I just hope I have a strong drink in my hands while doing it LOL....

I love the aging process and consider maturity to be an exciting time in life and just another way to grow. However, I don't care for people insisting that calendar age has anything to do with chronological age because it doesn't. I especially do not like web sites posting people's age, because I think there are security issues. Yes, people do treat others differently based on what they think the other person's age is and I've encountered some silly situations where people thought I belonged to their age group and shsould behave as though I was one of them, when I wasn't and should not have and didn't. They were, uh, confused.

Oh my, in response to kb, I had my last child at 37 and I have also had people ask if I was her grandma! I'm only 43 now, and I certainly don't think I look like a grandma! (even though I am) *grin*

Whats funny to me is when I have my children with me. People often assume they are my grandchildren because I had them so late in life. I guess I understand that and in that regard I am probably younger in my heart than I am physically. Children have a way of doing that to you. Just seems lately that I feel every minute of my age, just going through something I guess.

My other half likes to tell people . specially little kids he is 21 - even they don't believe him - well they wouldn't would they when I am telling them he is the same age as my 38! xxx

Maybe its a stage I'm going through. By the way 38 is not old at all.

I just turned 48 in January, and I don't feel a day over 30! Age is just a number, so why is it that so many have a hard time accepting their age? Good luck on your interview, and don't worry about the age. I was hired last year for my dream job, one that I have trained for over 10 years for, wildland firefighter, so if I can accomplish that (at my age lol) A lot of Southern women grow old gracefully, ha! I'm gonna give it hell all the way lol and staying active, and 'feeling' young is half the battle.

Good for you. Thats wonderful that you got the job that you so wanted. However, you did have extensive training which must have helped. All the same you should be very proud of yourself.

I am lucky to possess a baby face. lol Most of the people around told me that I look younger than my age. But of course, it is not all physical look. And if I may say, I am proud to tell to everyone how old I am. For I already achieve enough. That I am aging successfully and fulfilled.

I think up until now, I've always looked younger than I am, but at some point it catches up with you no matter what and there is no way to deny just how old you are.

I think I've been turned down for a lot of jobs I've applied for because I'm 53. I don't care what age I am, I have a lot of experience and if they don't want me, it's their loss! But I still resent the fact that I can't seem to get a job, temp or permanent.

I hope your interview went well dear friend, please keep us updated. I have actually been told that I look much younger than I really am! People always look at me and say I am in my late twenties, when in actual fact I am 36, 37 in May, still the right side of 40 I know but I am flattered when people say that I look younger. I always admit my age, fortunately I have never been turned down because of my age. Even when I went on a college course all the students were 16 and 17 and I was 32 and I was still accepted onto the course.

I just got back from my interview and from what I could see the applicants were all much younger than myself, but I still presented well. I won't know until Wednesday if I am eligible for a second interview or not. What was surprising to me was the salary. She told me that $2000.00 a month was on the low end. Go figure.

yup, specially as you said from our aged, some companies need only young & look great, thats why sometimes im really think about my aged, what about if were getting old & still we need to work because of self either family nobody will like us because we are old, how about our talent, just they care the young & sexy:)

I think that particularly when the job has alot of public exposure that they want the younger employee because it makes their company look better.

Sometimes age works to an advantage. Younger people may make a store look more "hip", especially if they are attracting that age bracket, but a lot of younger people are not serious about their jobs. I don't want to get in trouble for saying that, so keep in mind that I did not say ALL younger people. I've worked with younger people and they tend to work for a goal, like buying a car for example, and they tend to quit when they reach their goal. An older person wants to work because they have a family to support. (even if their family is just them) They tend to be more reliable as long term employees. Ok, I'm comparing extremes here, like high school vs. the 40 crowd and my theory does not apply to everyone. But on a side note, companies cannot ask you your age and they cannot discriminate because of your age so you should have just as good of a chance as anyone else. Also, age has the advantage of experience, which 9 times out of 10 will seal the deal. Good luck! Oh, and if that's you in the picture, you don't look very old yourself! :)

That is me in the picture and I'm 48. One thing the employer asked me yesterday was "What can you tell me about yourself that I haven't already asked?" My reply was "That I wasn't there for just a paycheck, that I was there because I sincerely wanted to work, that I wanted a sense of independence and to fell that I was a contributing member of society". Whereas, yes you are right alot of younger employees are there because its a stepping stone to something else.

You'll do fine darlin. You may be older than some of the people behind the counters, but you are still beautiful and have much more life experience than they'll get in a good long while. It does get hard sometimes to accept that aging process, but you can choose to do it gracefully, and not become bitter about those who will always be younger, smaller, tighter, and by virtue of their youth, more beautiful. I've never lied about my age. I tell it proudly. I'm 53 and don't look even close to it. Maybe that helps, I don't know. But everyone, and I mean everyone, is shocked to find out my age. I appear and act much younger and I think that is mainly due to my attitude and outlook. I've retained a sense of wonder and awe and can still be delighted by life. You know, when I was young and very small and very gorgeous, I was so often dismissed immediately by women older than myself. they wouldn't give me the time of day and refused to look beyond the surface and see the real me. Well, I was determined not to be that way, not to be bitter about my lost youth, and to never treat a younger, lovely woman like I was treated. I've accomplished that, K. I have many young woman friends and although it's hard sometimes, I insist on accepting them with open arms and an open heart. I'm the better for it, too. Don't worry, K. You're gonna be fine. Sorry, I've got an emergency e-mail and I've got to get to it. But, I'll be looking for your post about your interview and how it went.

Unfortunately, everyone was younger than I by quite a bit, but I do think I presented as well as anyone else. I won't know until Wednesday if they will want me to come in for a second interview.

I agree. I think an older person is more likely to stay with the company than a younger one.
