Spanking versus Time Out

We have a very strong willed 3yr old and we have to keep the discipline method fresh. If we continue to threaten the same type of punishment it gets old with her and doesn't work. It seems that alot of times the threat of a time out (where she has to stand still and not do what she wants) is more effective than the threat of a spanking which is physical pain. What works best for your kids? Has a particular discipline method worked at one time, but not anymore? ** Note: I am referring to a moderate spanking, not beating or whipping a child. Please do not misunderstand.

From what I've seen, when a parent spanks a kid, the kid acts even worse than before. The same goes for yelling at a kid. The kid will yell even more just for the attention, even if it is negative attention. I don't understand why kids do that, but they do (I did that too when I was a kid). I would stick by the time out method.
