Okay I am sorry everyone that I have been so slow in responding to discussions over the last few days, partly because I have been back on my pain meds and they have hit me hard but mainly cos my laptop, you know that machine I couldn't live without has decided to pop a key off the other week and since then it has been getting harder and harder to get the M to work! My other half knows someone at work who can fix laptop keyboards and has tried to get a hold of him without success and a computer shop we approached quoted us almost £200 to sort out the keyboard! So I have been getting a very sore and swollen finger and getting exasperated beyond belief - even trying to think of responses that do not contain the letter m anywhere in them! Today I was soo fed up i decided to get my other half to go to the Computer shop and buy me a £5 keyboard with a usb connector and hey Voila - a keyboard that works! For those of you who thought I must have looked silly laying here with just a wall lamp on and wearing my shades this goes one better , I am still wearing the shades and I now have a keyboar stuck on my laptop with blu tak so I can actually respond to posts and start some of my own without losing the plot altogether! hee hee hee
Have any of you guys ever had to adapt anything in this way? Any embarrasing stories to tell?

I was diagnosed as having a form of tendonitis in my left hand that requires surgery before I can use my left hand to full capacity again. On top of that I ended up getting 2nd degree burns all over my right hand from an equipment malfunction while steaming milk at Star Bucks.
So I didn't have full use of either of my hand and had to learn how to do a lot of things with my feet and toes.
Now today I still can't use my left hand fully but my burns healed into tiny scars that I have to make knuckles for someone to even notice yet I will still do some things with my feet.
My honey says I have monkey feet and if I ever start throwing poo at people he is leaving me. :)

Oh sweets what are you like eh? Well I am absolutely hopeless at DIY (no not that DIY!) but putting things together, you know the flatpacks that come and you have to spend a few hours putting together or should that be a few weeks and a few screams, sore fingers, howls and grumbles and shouting at your nearest and dearest because you can't find screw a to put into joint c and all that malarkey! Well one year I bought myself a computer desk didn't I, and yes much to my chagrin it came flatpacked, oh it's easy to erect the guy said (no pun intended) so off I trots with it and do you think I could put the damn thing up, I nearly gave myself a hernia getting it home on the buses this was years before I got my car! Anyhow I was in tears, I was nearly screaming the house down in anger cos I couldn't do it, in the end I gave up and I improvised, I used a couple of filled up supermarket boxes and laid the main frame across it and made it into a makeshift computer desk! It looked a sight but it did! And it lasted! I could have taken it back but the weight and hassle of doing that plus the fact I'd look a right idiot saying that the desk was ok but I couldn't put it together, and arguing for a refund, it wasn't worth it! Never again have I bought flatpacks, for the price of my own sanity! So don't ask me to do DIY!

lol that is why you should stick to 'clock' watching huh? lol Sorry couldn't resist that one! hee hee hee
I can just imagine you struggling with that desk all the way home , trying to pur it all together and then giving up! lol You could have saved yourself a fortune just by finding a cheap sheet of wood and using that on the boxes instead of the unbuildable desktop! lol
I promise never to ask you to do ANY kind of Diy sweety - you can do it for me instead! Hugs xxx

I am weaning myself off the shades now angel! Tell gissi he should know why I have a headache - he has heard how loud my kids can be and that is when they are supposed to be being quite or making noise in another room cos i am on the phone! lol I did not thump the keyboard - he heard me playing with the new one and trying to connect it up but David on the rare occasion that he got to use the laptop pounded the keys though so it must be his fault! Tell Gissi I know he has been a good boy but you on the other hand..........lol Love and hugs Angel xxxx

Well just after xmas.. SOMETHING happened to the spacebar on my wireless keyboard.. We have "no idea" what happened to it.. but i woke up one morning after hubby had been up at the pc all night and it was STIFF.. i am a pretty light typer, i dont pound on the keys, i like them so i just have to barely touch them! My hubby on the other hand when he types the entire desk shakes.. literally!
So i went out and got a really expensive keyboard for us since we had gotten money from my mom for xmas.. and wouldnt you know it, the spacebar on THAT keyboard TOO was broken! only i didn't realize that was the problem in the beginning, i thought it was just a tough spacebar, then oneday being frusterated by the lack of spacing in my typing.. i looked down and realized one side (of course the side i use) of the space bar was down farther then the other! So i returned it and got a new one, and so far so good! i love this keyboard, its quiet and light touch! It's even quiet when hubby bangs on the keys!

Poor mummy! So sorry you're having such pain still! I don't really have any fun tech stories to tell, just saw your post and wanted to say hi! Big hugs!
Well, the computer I'm working at is sort of interesting, with a black tower, white monitor, putty-colored keyboard, and gray mouse. I've been thinking about painting the whole lot purple, but that's mostly because of Transdisc's post about unmatched pairs. It's almost always his fault, you know!
More hugs!
ps I'm fine, just needed some catharsis to clear my head this weekend! OK, maybe a little bit of putting a stick of dynamite in someone's bum, too!)

GG sweety I am so glad you responded to this post as I have been worried about you - but you already knew that , right? Hope that the posts helped and they exploded big still in their bum too! lol I think pink is a nicer colour for your puter - specially a lovely pale pink with a shimmer through it! lol Trust trans to make you worry about your computer not matching - if I weren't already neurotic I would blame him for causin it! Thank you for the hugs and the reassurance you are ok sweetheart - remember just give a yell if you need mw! Hugs and love xxx

Ok, I'm probably a bit more techie than the previous responders but I had a computer once that looked like a sick robot. My brother gave me an old Acer once and it went kaput but then I acquired another archaic computer (HP) from work. That computer had a whole 2MB of hard drive space. Plus it got shorted once and only worked at about half power. So...I removed the harddrive and power supply from the Acer and stuck them into/onto the HP. Since there wasn't room to contain it within the casing, the second power supply stuck out of the front. So now the poor HP had a casing half on and plugs sticking out both ends. (grin) -Tink

Hi mam! I know you are pleased to be here - we are so happy that you are back online but I am the lucky one as I still got to see and speak to you when you weren't!
Seemingly I can buy a new laptop keyboard for about £40 off ebay - I just have to keep looking for the right model - David even knows how to replace it now! The M really was a pain in the butt wasn't it! My epidural is at 12 on Monday and i am getting a bit nervous now! xxx

Awww... I'm sorry to hear you had so much trouble with your keyboard, my friend, but what an ingenious way to save £195!!! Well done, you! I don't have any embarrassing moments to share except for the time when I spilled water on my keyboard, had to quickly turn it upside down, then grab a hairdryer to dry it out! lol.
I hope your back soon gets sorted. I hate to think of anybody in pain like that, especially when it's a dear friend.
Brightest Blessings in the hope you Get Well Soon! xxxx

It is quite ingenious isn't it? lol I am quite proud of myself and think blu tak is so wonderful at the moment - I knew there was a reason for hiding it from Niamh! I remember you spilling the water and I thought you did a wonderful job of preventing any real damage!
My back WILL get sorted sweetheart - i am staying positive - I get my epidural in a week and a half!
Love and Hugs xxxx

By the jingoes Mo, you are so clever!! How can you be embarrassed by that...I would never have thought about using a keyboard like that and isn't Blutac wonderful??
I so hope you're feeling better soon. I'm feeling a little better. The back pain hasn't gone but it's changed. Instead of constant, varying degrees of a sharpish ache and being sore to touch it's gone to a sharp pain every now and then. I feel weak a lot of the time and very tired but that's because my sleep patterns are awry. I'm back for more x-rays and a visit to the Dr on wednesday next...2 days time.
Sending hugs, healing vibes and thoughts full of fun and laughter...see, made you smile! :)

Awww thank you MsTickle - you make me feel so good about myself! lol I was without my laptop at the weekend as my other half took it into work to get the laptop man to look at it, turns out to get the replacement integrated keyboard from Dell will cost about £80 and a new battery about the same but should be able to get both off of Ebay for about half the price so I am going to be scouring ebay and I can keep using my own device meanwhile!
I am so sorry that you are still suffering and I can empathise with you on the back pain and the sleeping problems! Lets hope you get some good news and relief very , very soon. Will you let me know how you get on with the dr? Love, hugs and prayers sweety and yes, you made me smile but you always do! xxx

Hi mummymo,
I'm so sorry to hear that you've been in so much pain again. I do hope your headache is under control now.
Congratulations on getting a new keyboard, as this whole thing sounds quite frustrating, to say the least. As you may know, my desktop monitor has been giving me grief for months now. Some days, I almost hold my breath, waiting for it to give out completely. It does 'a thing' where it blacks out, and then comes back on 'when it's good and ready to.' We've just spent the weekend at my sister's, and she's sent us home with 'one of the older type' monitors ... you know, the thick chunky kind. My current monitor is one of those lovely 'flat screen types,' but it was purchased as a floor model, and maybe this is the problem, as it isn't very old. My sister was able to help with those recent glitches too, and has offered me some solutions, which I do hope will work.
As for adapting things, well up until a couple of years ago, we virtually had 'no lights' in our basement. Our laundry room was dark like a cave, and we had an old broken lamp, tipped on it's side, so that it'd shine down on the washer and dryer. The light bulb used to hang out of the broken socket. I know this sounds dangerous, and completely nuts, but I couldn't afford to get the wiring fixed. Miraculously, in the summer of 2006, some dear friends volunteered to do some renovations for us, as a gift, and we now have proper working lights in our basement, including the laundry room.:) Take care. xxx

Someonesmom I am so , so pleased to see you sweeetheart! i know you have had some awful problems and i hope that the monitor your sister gave you helps ease things - we have flat monitors on both pcs - the kids one is attatched to the wall - the only reason they have got a flat screen is cos my partner got a special deal on it as it was an ex display model but we have had it about a year and a half now and not had any problems ...so far! I am so glad that you have proper lights in the basement now - i would be worrying about you if they were still the same!
Hugs xxx
ps don't worry about the pain - I think it is just cos I did a lot last week and i get my epidural in less than 2 weeks now! xxx

The person gone in the morning if come back in the evening could never be called a forgotten person. This is a proverb I translated from my National Language Urdu into English here. You were here and you are here now. You did not forget to come back and we say you warm welcome back.
