Library ... or ... Internet....

When I was still in high school and college and internet search was not yet known and commonly used, I go to libraries to search for school projects and find answers to school assignments. Now I observed that my sons just log on the net to search for the school assignments that they have. I wonder if they can get all the answers from the net. Do you or your family still go to libraries to read and search for school assignments and projects. Or do you just search on the internet. Which is more helpful and convenient, library or internet?

The internet is definitely much faster and easier to research topics. Especially with websites like Wikipedia which are FILLED with all sorts of information on just about any topic you could think of! However, there is a lot of inaccurate information on the internet. So it's not always a reliable source. I know for that reason lots of teachers don't allow students to site internet websites in their research papers and projects. I know when I'm doing research for school, I prefer using the internet because it's faster and I can get the project over with sooner. But if I'm looking for information on a subject I'm interested in and want to spend a lot of time just learning about, I'll go to the library and get a bunch of books to just sit there and read.

Yes you are correct in saying that internet is faster and convenient, but it doesn't give all the answers that you want.

I use a combination of both for my assignments. I use the internet a lot for just random assignments if I need information, but if I have a big research paper or something, then I always go to the library and find books on the topic. I am usually able to find the most useful information on the internet though, cause I can go onto online databases and find articles from scholarly journals and things that I wouldn't necessarily find at the local libraries.

Hi joyce! I personally think libraries are filled with verifyable academic information where as the internet is filled with tons of information but its more opinion than anything else! Just as an example the internet actually increases plaugarism. I use the internet to find the books and reference manuals I need. As a preliminary research tool it's invaluable but you just can't beat proper books! for me there is something satisfying about physically searching, finding what I need and confirming what I thought! rather than being bombarded with a million different opinions which more than not have very little relevance. :)

While the internet is excellent for quickly finding information in general, sometimes it's still necessary to visit a library. Sometimes there are reference books that you can look at while in the library, but are not allowed to take them home like regular library books. Many libraries also have links to other libraries that can be accessed to obtain certain professional journals that may not be available anywhere else.

We hadn't even heard of the internet in high school so we did it by going to libraries. We would also go to used book stores and buy old national geographics for the stories and pictures. I wish we had the internet back then, I use it all the time when I have never heard of something. It blows the mind the info you can find on the net.

Yes, before its time consuming going to libraries and buying some books, magazines for research and projects. Now its very easy finding information just surfing the net. But I think, the libraries have still all the information that we can get, even the very old files, I wonder if internet is that complete and thorough to give information for all kinds of research.

Embarrassingly, I rarely go to libraries now. Yes, like you, as a child and teenager (before internet was here), I was there all the time. It's hard to believe how lucky kids are today to have access to so much on any topic just at the tip of their fingers! If we had a report or anything we needed, we'd have to go to the library, look up in the index for our subject, search, often travel to other town libraries, and read, borrow, research galore. Now, it's a bit crazy, how you can write a whole 100 page report all from internet notes.

Yes, kids today are lucky coz they have both libraries and internet to use for their research. Unlike before, we have to write down, now they just have to copy and paste and edit some notes.

Internet is much faster to do research. It helps to find all sorts of details in seconds. Library book needs to found and the possibility of finding the best answer compared to internet is less. In case of books, you need to find the right books.

Yes internet is faster to do research as compared to books. But I wonder if it can give you all the answer and details that you want as compared to books.

internet is more useful because of fast search and vast resource and ability to search quickly. But reading printed text is far more comfortable ,as far as I am concerned,

We use a combination of both! My children inherited my love of books and love to read - i cannot afford to keep them going in books! My son loves to study in the library at school sometimes with books and sometimes on the computers there! I think in todays world that our children have to learn how to research using the internet as it is such a big part of our society but I don't think they will ever replace books! xxx

Hi mummymo... Yes, books are still really of much use because one can read all the details there. You are right a combination of the books and internet is really helpful in research. Good to know that your children love to read books.

I still go to the library to read books because to me reading is a way to transport yourself into another world ,but I do my searchin using the internet.

Today I don't go to the library any more. As the books are old and dirty. I prefer to download e-books or search information via the net. It is much more convenient. I think it's possible to find any study material from the internet. I can just do it at home and I can search it anytime I want. As to the library, it doesn't open 24 hours. I don't like borrowing a book, I like to own it. So I am not interested in going to library any more.

I think I also preferred library resources most when I was studying philology in a high school, but some years later, as I became more familiar with the vastness of internet, I found out that it is also a helpful source of info. For example, I used to be a hard-dying fan of mrock/metal music, when I was 18-20, and there is not much info about this kind of music in libraries, because only several books have been written about it in the past years. However, I once discovered that there are tons of information about all kinds of music on the internet. So, Internet should also be considered as a very informative and educating source of info.

Yes, I agree with all of you that internet is faster and more convenient. So you can use internet to search for school assignments and projects. But if you are not in a hurry, if you just want to learn something interesting, especially if you want to deeply learn it, library is the right place.
