Okay so this should be an intresting discussion. Do you or would you use Whisky on your teething childs gums? My mother did it for me because her mother did it for her and so on. I have heard many different views on this and would like to hear yours. Why would or wouldn't you use it???? Thank you in advance for your response.

I think it would be irresponsible parenting to give you child whisky - in any amount - i know it was done however many years back but there are serious consequences these day coz it's just not safe. I didn't use any of the usual gel stuff either - what worked best for my daughter were the following :- * a cold cloth that has been put in the fridge for ages, they will gnaw on it to sooth their gums. * cold teething rings work well too. * a pacifier did the trick for my daughter - she chewed at it & never complained about teething. * you can buy teething rusks - they're little biscuits they can gnaw on that work well too.

You say there are serious consequences this days "coz" its just not safe. Was it safe then? And what are the serious consequences that we have now that they didn't then? (again just making a discussion here)

The only argument that I've heard aside from the self righteous ones (looks around)is that whiskey (as well as any liquid or ointment rubbed on the gums with the exception of water) is quickly rinsed off the gums with the baby's saliva which can cause numbing in the throat increasing the baby's chance of choking.

i wouldn't use whiskey simply for the reason that they might grow to like it and start on it at a young age. people do say that it helps somewhat, but like someone said earlier, there are lots of things that we can do when children are teething. i'd rather use those safer methods than have my child 'addicted'.

Personally I don't see a child becoming addicted to whiskey because of a drop on your finger and put on there gums. In fact a lot of peditericans say not to use orajel because of the numbing agent. If too much is used it can cause the child not to swallow which can cause the child to choke. I think there is pros and cons to every thing we have these days. I just think its funny that our grandparents and there parents used a lot of "odd" things and they didn't see half the problems we do these days.

yes, i have to agree that our grandparents did use lots of odd stuff hehe. and yes, children don't really get addicted at that young an age but still it's just a worry or niggling effect that is on my mind i guess.

oh i too have heard of this before, yet i never did it with my children. no real reason just never came up. but i know in my family that is the way we were brought up. I know my mother use to give me a bit of brandy to put me to sleep at nite. i just never did that with my children. not because i thought doing things like this is wrong. i just never thought of it

A lot of people don't remember what there parents or grandparents did. I was just talking about it with a coworker and he says a lot of younger people think its a bad thing or haven't heard of it but ask some one a generation or two up and they will say yes, we did that.

We recently used whiskey on our child's molars. All four are coming at the same time and they are taking forever. Poor kid is just in constant agony. We used Motrin and Tylenol along with Orajel but none of them seem to work well. His teeth still hurt and he's getting all kinds of artificial chemicals. We tried a dab of whiskey rubbed on his gums and the pain seemed to be gone within a few minutes. It was probably 4-6 hours before he complained about his teeth again. He was not "loopy" "silly" or "drunk". It was just a little anisthetic to ease the pain.

Thank you for your honesty I know a lot of people use it but won't admit to it. I used it for my daughter and it seemed to be the only thing that REALLY worked.

if we had whiskey on hand i'd try a dab of it on my son's gums. seriously. he's been teething for awhile and in the past few days he's gotten much worse to where he will not take a bottle at all (which is crazy for my formula loving son) he also will not sleep good during the night, so far we're up to two sleepless nights for us and baby.. as he wakes up every hour on the hour crying in pain. i've tried everything i can find - he hates the teething rings, the cold/frozen wash cloths, teething tabs & i refuse to use orajel after reading about what could happen if he swallows it (which he's very hard to keep still when applying anythin on his gums) the only gel i can use is the homeopathic stuff but it only works for a few minutes and doesn't take the edge off to where he can take a bottle or even want to play. i'm not an advocate of baby tylenol or baby motrin, i only try and give him doses of those when nothing else will work and in the past two nights the motrin seems to not be working as well as it had before. so i reached for a remedy of my own, it may not be whiskey but its all we had available here at the house - cherry vodka. all i did was get enough on my finger to make it slightly wet to where i could rub it on his bottom gums that are incredibly sore. within a minute he wanted stopped crying in pain & wanted to play - within 30 mins he was ready for formula. he actually ate 4 - 6oz bottles in 2 hours yesterday after i dabbed this on his gums! i've been looked at as being wrong for doing this already, but you know what? i don't care! i don't see that a dab which isn't even enough to drench my finger with is going to have any longterm affects on my child. if it works, then thats what i'm going to use - plain & simple. i'd much rather do this than have to keep him in a fog from the baby tylenol & motrin. seriously, in my opinion its better. people are always going to judge though.. but all in all yes - i'd use whiskey if it meant it'd help my son feel better. i'd do anything for him.

I used orajel and babyteethers becuase I was afriad to use whiskey it just didn't sit right with me. I didn't want to do something that would hurt my kids. But I know my mom gave my brother southern comfort for his gums. He turned out ok .. I guess it's all in what you feel comfortable with. I didn't feel comfortable with the whiskey so I used the orajel and teethers. A popsicle was good too. because they could suck on it and it tasted good and felt good. LOL you just have to be careful when doing this method. LOL!!!
