Toys R Us

I received an email today from Gerald L. Storch Chairman and CEO of Toys R US. Basically he was saying they have made new rules for purchasing products from the companies who manufacture toys they sell. One was regarding lead in paint of course, but the one that really got to me was one about PVC use in toys. I wish I could paste the article, but I don't have a high enough rating yet. In a nutshell what he said was by the end of 2008 that the manufactures they buy from could no longer use PVC to make their toys. That hit me like a ton of bricks. I remember back in the 80's, when companies who manufacture water lines for mobile homes were told they could no longer use PVC because of the cancer threat the product contained. As I said that was the 80's! Now I find out 20 some years later that PVC is still being used in our childrens toys. The ones they handle, and put in their mouths everyday. I thought the lead paint in the toys was horrific, but everyone claimed ignorance about that. The PVC is one thing they can not claim ignorance about. After all here is the CEO of one of America's biggest toy retailers telling manufactures that they will no longer purchase these toys after the end of this year. My question is why were they buying them to begin with, knowing what has already been found about PVC. Does this gigantic corp. not care anything about the very people who are their core customers, our children. I think this is unforgivable. What do you think?

You know, I dont understand how some things can be regulated immediately and laws can be passed over night, yet when it comes to things like this, it can sit "unnoticed" for YEARS before someone actually does something about it. I seriously think this is all about the politics. I am sick of everything being about politics but this is getting ridiculous. Its all about the money. Thats all it will ever be about any more.

That's very disturbing. There should have been regulations in place as soon as the health risks related to PVC were uncovered. Do these gigantic corporations care about their customers? Their care is indirect as their primary concern extends only in the direction of revenue and company risk. What's worse is this: the consumers in this case are children. And children are more susceptible to these chemicals than adults. Unforgivable? Absolutely.
