i got a 98 pontiac sunfire and just spent nearly $1200 getting engine work done.(obviously i got ripped off ) and still having problems.....there is still a bad miss in the car and it doesn't have any take off power.......could this be a compression problem?......any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Depends on what all it does. Through your description you have given some information, but it could also be something as simple as timing is off just slightly, plugs and wires, or numerous other simple things. $1200 for engine work is expensive, esp if they returned the vehicle knowing that it still has a problem. If it was me I would be calling them back up and telling them that there is still a problem with your car and that they need to fix it.
